The only edition to buy

This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions

Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...

You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

In contrast, the case studies included in the earlier volume (Dubai, Sana’a, Baghdad, Algiers, Tunis, and Cairo), now supplemented in this volume by three older cities (Amman, Beirut, and Rabat) and five newer oil cities (Riyadh, Kuwait City, Manama, Doha and Abu-Dhabi), focus, often critically, on their rapid transformations.

Each case study traces its colonial and post-colonial history, the evolution of its distinctive social and physical structures, and its intersection with the region and the world. It pays particular attention to, inter alia, the effects of recent wars, migration patterns, petroleum prices, noting the increased role of ‘rulers’ in city planning/real estate investment both within and between Arab countries. Each traces the increased interactions between multinational firms and local developers as they strategize and compete to elevate themselves to global city status. Neoliberalism and State-sponsored advanced capitalism are all implicated in the painful task of balancing identity and post-modernity.

This is a great book that has helped me understand the history of Arab cities and the varying development patterns across the region. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in the Middle East. It's also a quick primer on any of the cities featured in the deep dive section. The section on Riyadh was excellent.

"Free Yourself" is the Definitive Guide for all Aspiring Entrepreneurs Dreaming of Breaking Free and Being Your Own Boss!

I was hooked into this book from the get-go. Rob Cubbon's "Free Yourself: Leave Your Boss & Be Your Own Boss" is exactly what aspiring entrepreneurs need to start up their journey to freedom. I know because I am one of those people, and I have been following Author Rob Cubbon's journey for some time now.

What I love about this book is it doesn't go over the top like many books do on "Quitting your job and doing what you want." It speaks to readers on a level they can identify with, and when someone, such as an author-blogger-entrepreneur is tapping into your emotions because they have been there and know how it works, you listen to what they say. This is how the book "speaks" to readers. Within the first page I knew I had found the type of book that had been written "just for me" as well as the many other aspiring entrepreneurs working to put their message out there, to share what they have with the world. This book is powerful because it focuses on the weaknesses and struggles people cope with: doubt, uncertainty, confusion, and often, isolation.

For example:
Rob says: "When the work day finishes, your colleagues switch off their computers, go home to cook dinner and watch TV. Other people's "downtime" is your "uptime." This is when your mind is switched on."

This one paragraph defined my lifestyle, and probably a good many other writers/bloggers as well.

Free Yourself is about creating the kind of content that people value and are willing to pay you for. The more "free" content you put out there that helps people to solve a problem or adds value to their lives, the more people are going to come for more of what you have to give away or offer. Rob clearly shows that he is an authority on the subject of creating such content through his Udemi courses, eBooks and the free content he offers on his site.

This book has a lot of takeaway messages for people who desire to break free of the life they are living in order to live the life they truly want. It is broken down into several key themes that show you how to set yourself up for business by, first of all, treating yourself as if you ARE a business. Rob shows the difference between active and passive income, and how to get to the passive you first have to earn the active. Once you have worked hard enough at one [active income], the other will show up [passive income] and when you’re ready, it’s “See ya, boss!"

As readers will learn from the book, it takes time and effort to build that “Entrepreneurial Mindset. And everyone's mindset is different, just as everyone's talent and passion is different. Being a minimalist can play a big role in the entrepreneur’s journey. By cutting back on nothing but the bare essentials, you will have more money to invest in your business.

Besides, as the author tells us all you really need is a laptop, a Wi-Fi connection and you can create anything from anywhere that people are willing to buy if it helps them with the ongoing struggle to define themselves, find a niche or discover that “sweet spot” that is your very own.

The book is also backed up by proven case studies of entrepreneurs who have made the leap and are now living the life they wanted through building their business from home or in another country/region, such as South East Asia. They figured out what they wanted and what they had to do to get there, and they did it. As Rob says, “You can do it.” The case studies add a lot of weight to the book because we can see that not everybody is a Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg, but we can still build a business that offers a service and products people want to pay for.

The key messages I found to be most valuable in this book that Rob teaches are:
• Rather than concentrate on what makes money, it is better to concentrate on what you love.
• How you don't have to come up with the next HUGE idea to change the world, but rather, you just need to start instead of worrying and thinking so much;

The sections that I found most beneficial are:
• Creating a website and the importance of why you need a website, a domain name and relevant content;
• How to find your "sweet spot" that you can create content around and build a thriving business that makes money;
• How to get clients, make contacts, and hook up with people the right people both online and off to build your brand and business;
• Habits--family and health section is great because it talks about the balance between spending time with family, exercising and maintaining your lifestyle as a business owner;
• Think of yourself as a business: set up a bank account, get an accountant, and separate your business and personal affairs no matter where you are in the world;
• Create Your Website: setting up your CMS [content management system], Domain and Webhosting...and above all, create CONTENT!
• And finally, promote your website by giving, giving, and giving before you ask people to join or visit.

The final section of the book asks you to think clearly about what differentiates you from other people. Then, you can write blogs, create YouTube vids, set up a website, interview people, and start building your brand.

What I really liked about this book, aside from the case studies and real-world suggestions/action steps you can implement right away is, the author shares his own personal experiences and he lives what he teaches.

Rob shows readers that "Yes, you can do it" and provides enough relevant know-how and authority to remove the doubt and uncertainty that stops so many from pursuing their dreams.

This book is an eye opener

I see only two reasons you shouldn't have read "Free Yourself, Leave Your Job and Be Your Own Boss": either you love your job or you are already a successful entrepreneur.
If that's not the case it's a book for you. It doesn't dwell on technical details, it's not a manual, but it's eye-opening. If you don't feel well at your workplace and you need to open your eyes to entrepreneurial alternatives this book is a great start.

I didn't like just two things about it "Free Yourself, Leave Your Job and Be Your Own Boss". First it's for beginners and I'm not such. I've been side hustling for over two years. I had my website and email list. However, that's just me and it served me well as a reminder.
Second, I think Rob broke the rule "Write books, not lead magnets." The last 10% of book is just an overview of his services. Yes, they are very relevant to the book's subject and helpful for his audience. But still... books are for reading *sigh*
It always spoils the, otherwise good, experience when a book finishes with advertising.

And I liked all the rest. The book is concise and to the point. It's not packed with step-by-step instructions or tools recommendations, but with timeless advice which will be relevant in the next century too: take care of your mind and body; provide value; do what you love, are good at and for what there is already some demand, connect with your clients; when going to conferences focus on people, not on selling your stuff and so on and so forth.
In addition, this advice is really basic, provided in a sensible sequence and not overwhelming. It's very important in case of beginners who are likely to get stuck in face of the slightest obstacle.
It's written by practitioner who did what he preaches less than a decade ago. It's huge. Someone who walks the talk has three times higher chances to teach his skill/ knowledge than a certified coach (that's recent discovery of Coach.me).
"Free Yourself, Leave Your Job and Be Your Own Boss" is also written in a direct, genuine style which I simply love. It speaks much better to me than dry textbooks.
It also includes 7 stories of other successful entrepreneurs. I fully agree with Rob's train of thoughts about introducing co-authors with their stories; it made it real. This lifestyle business is not something reserved just for middle age single folks from rich Western countries. People from poor countries, humble backgrounds and with small kids did it too. I'm pretty sure you can identify with at least one of those stories.

Rob Cubbon's new book is as inspiring as it is practical, which is to say very much so

Rob Cubbon is becoming a brand name in my home. The reason I buy his books automatically is that he describes how he built a Web and graphics design business, moving on to teaching others how to do this. I've been studying this topic for over a year, and had I listened to Rob when I first found him long ago, I'd probably have a shop of my own by now.

It's perfectly okay that I didn't. I studied other things, such as health. That's the other reason i buy and recommend Rob's books: I have also come to understand it's not necessary to form myself into the robot worker the economy taught me I should be. What I am only just coming to understand is that if you hear this message from another, a coach like Rob Cubbon, for example, then you're going to be further along yet.

So I heartily endorse Rob as an instructor and personal coach. I have just started this book and expect to spend some time with it, as I am in the home stretch of my WordPress studies. Rob's book says, "Make your Website now!". As it happens, that's what I'm up to. And I'm so glad to have further advice and stimulating ideas about what work I can do, and what the possibilities are.

This is a book about advanced multimedia systems, what constitutes a distributed multimedia system, current and emerging technologies that support advanced multimedia systems, and how to design and implement a multimedia system. The technologies at the core of the computing revolution have reached a point where one can envision a distributed computing system composed of a number of elements strung together by various communications methodologies, all striving to serve the user in a semi-intelligent manner. The system understands and knows how to interpret and combine data elements of various types and present them to the user in the desired mode set by the user. Multimedia systems, especially distributed multimedia systems, present extraordinary design challenges. This book discusses the characteristics of multimedia systems, identifies these design challenges, and presents design approaches to address them in an efficient manner.

Technologies discussed in this book include those required for distributed multimedia messaging. The way technical and business documents are compiled, written, distributed, and read has undergone a radical transformation to computer-based electronic hypermedia documents. Distributed computing networks link a variety of platforms with different operating systems and applications that must interact to allow storage and transmission of hypermedia documents. Hypermedia documents encapsulate storage, compression, and format conversion information to allow adapting documents for the specific user location and desktop environment. Desktop videoconferencing, video messaging, and hypermedia repositories require a combination of technologies including communications, decompression at high rates, high-resolution display systems, and storage and rapid dissemination of multidimensional objects consisting of text, image, voice, audio, and full-motion video components.

With transmission bandwidths at a premium, techniques for the compression and decompression of data take on a very important and visible role. Compression techniques have been standardized for digitized objects like binary images, gray-scale images, color images, video images, audio, and full-motion video data. These compressed objects need to be stored, retrieved, and transmitted over LANs and WANs, and decompressed before being displayed. Lossy compression is used for compressing objects for which absolute data accuracy is not required. For example, when a video image is decompressed on a frame- by-frame basis at 30 frames/sec, the loss of one frame will not be perceived by a user. For higher-quality rendering, DSP chips may be used for performing such tasks as compression and decompression, vector quantization, and data pacing to provide higher-quality video. This book is intended to help you design a real-world multimedia solution for an enterprise. Businesses have networked systems that span facilities, cities, and nations, and have integrated applications running on these networks. There is a growing need to manage widely distributed data in a timely and effective manner. The following describes three important design issues for a well-designed distributed multimedia system:
1. The underlying data management system and how well it handles diverse and complex data types, high data volumes, fast and controlled transfer rates, data integrity under access from distributed users, and updates from distributed sour ces of data.
2. Specialized hardware and software for managing creation, retrieval, recomposition, and display of hypermedia documents and multimedia database records, and supporting a variety of storage, compression, and decompression standards.
3. An advanced user interface provided by a graphics workstation or PC with the capability of integrating text, graphics, pictures, sound, and video.

These three components form an important group of topics for discussion in this book. As we said earlier, this book is about what constitutes distributed multimedia systems, and how to design and implement an advanced distributed multimedia system. Readers are assumed to be students of computer programming or to have a professional interest in information systems and multimedia applications, especially in the design of advanced multimedia systems. We expect that the readers will have some understanding of the C and C++ languages (although that is not really necessary for understanding the examples) and MS Windows programming (again, not necessary but beneficial).

This book is divided into four major groupings of chapters that present relevant technologies—development methodologies, data modeling, and design—in a congruous manner. The progression in these chapter groups, especially Groups 1, 2, and 3, is important. These three groups are informative as well as tutorial in nature, especially when approached in sequence. At a more detailed level, the contents of the twelve chapters are as follows:
Group 1
Introduction to Multimedia Systems:
Group 1, comprising Chapter 1, concentrates on our definition of an advanced distributed multimedia system and an introduction of the prominent technologies and design features that contribute to a good multimedia system. Chapter 1 presents our basic definition of the various data elements and application sources associated with multimedia and the requirements of the universal multimedia application. We introduce the object types as well as specialized technologies used in multimedia systems. Th is chapter also introduces multimedia standards and compression and decompression technologies.
Group 2
Key Technologies for Multimedia Systems
Group 2, comprising Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5, presents the key technologies consisting of input and output technologies, compression and decompression techniques, and storage technologies. In Chapter 2 we present a detailed discussion of compression and decompression techniques, including CCITT Group 3 and 4 as well as JPEG and MPEG (and quantization). A coded example shows how compression and decompression are performed. In Chapter 3 we present file and data formats such as the RTF, TIFF, RIFF, and AVI standards. Chapter 4 is a detailed discussion of techniques, standards, and key design issues for input and output technologies, including display systems, image scanners, digital voice and audio components, and full-motion video cameras. Chapter 5 provides a detailed analysis of the various storage technologies, including magnetic storage, RAID, CD-ROM, rewriteable optical media, and jukeboxes.
Group 3
Architectural and Multimedia Application Design Issues
Group 3, comprising Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, presents a detailed discussion of the architectural and design issues that determine the functionality and the design strengths of a distributed multimedia system. Chapter 6 is dedicated to technologies and architectural issues comprising DSPs, processor and memory issues, connectivity via LAN and WAN (including ISDN), and overall architectural issues for multimedia systems. In Chapter 7 we discuss data flow control and other application design issues, including virtual reality for multimedia systems. Chapter 8 provides a discussion of authoring systems and user interface issues for multimedia systems. Chapter 9 presents an analysis of the design issues for multimedia messaging technologies i ncluding e-mail interface and addressing standards such as VIM, X.400, and X.500. In Chapter 10 we discuss the key design issues for distributed multimedia systems. The discussion includes design issues for multiserver networks, organizing a distributed multimedia database, managing objects in a distributed database, replication of objects, and storage optimization.
Group 4
Design Approaches to Advanced Multimedia Systems
Group 4, comprising Chapters 11 and 12 presents a design methodology to prepare readers of the book for adopting an advanced methodology for modeling the requirements and defining objects, and presents a step-by-step approach to multimedia systems design along with real coded examples. In Chapter 11 we present a detailed design methodology for examining the requirements of the enterprise and the application, the current architecture and feasibility issues, and performance requirements. This chapter also presents a detailed system design methodology. In Chapter 12 we present design issues for a real-world example of a multimedia system application. This example will help the reader understand and put to immediate use the knowledge gained from this book.

In addition, a glossary of terms is provided for reference along with a complete detailed index. The exercises at the end of each chapter encourage readers to apply what they have learned through actual design and implementation. References, where applicable, are identified in footnotes.

A number of new concepts and methodologies are being presented in this book. The authors hope that the reader will enjoy exploring them and building upon them as much as the authors enjoyed developing them. We will find it especially rewarding if we have succeeded in promoting new ideas and avenues in the advancement of distributed multimedia applications technology.

A student's viewpoint

I am a student of computer science and i have a multimedia systems course in our syllabus. The recommended book for this course was "Multimedia Systems Design" By Prabhat Andleigh and Kiran Thakrar. I had high expectations from this book,which i am sorry to say, were not even satisfied to even 1%. This book has been a saga of confusions for me.

For e.g

On Chapter 1;Page 4, they are defining something called as "Multimedia elements" where elements are defined as components of multimedia. So far its fine but its when they actually list their components , that i get confused. They include facsimile?, GIS maps??, fractals??? as multimedia components. How are facsimile, GIS maps, fractals components of a multimedia? My belief is that these are technologies that interact with multimedia at different levels for different uses, not necessarily making themselves a component of multimedia. When one actually reads the part explained for fractals, they start to wonder, why are compression algorithms not part of this list. Hmm what were we discussing again? oh yeah multimedia components ... d'oh where did compression come here?

Further ahead on page 33 they even define basic objects of multimedia and say that the different components are different manifestations of the basic objects which are texts, images and video. Now shouldnt i be expecting this under elements of multimedia??

Chapter 2 and 3 are the only ok chapters. The jpeg program they have given lacks 1> i dont think it writes jpeg header 2> i dont think its written for RGB images, rather its written for 256 colour images. But given that this book is supposed to be an overview of multimedia systems, i was not surprised.

I would rather like to believe that Chapters 4 and 5 dont exist. Given these chapters i wonder who are the intended readers of this book??

Hmm, as much as i would like to review each page of this book but really my point here is, the book seems to be disorganised. The classification of various multimedia types and such are really confusing, i mean "interactive TV using set-top system" is an application class. Arent classes supposed to be more general than that?

With my due respect to the authors, who are presumably well experienced in this industry, i believe they must really review their book once again and probably make it more enjoyable.
