This books kicks *ss!

"Office Politics" is a major upgrade on a very good book by a similar name by the same author (now out of print). I have read both and this new version lays it out even better. The fact that the author has brought back a new, better version instead of just hanging it up is fantastic news for anyone who wants to get the real deal on what it takes to navigate the undercurrents of Corporate America (though I bet this applies in any country and nearly every organization). I also bought a copy for each of my children who are now entering the workforce fresh out of college.

I honestly believe that if I had read this book in my 20s rather than spending so many decades in a sort of naive bliss, I would have done much better in my career-- made more money, been better treated, had more enjoyment, would have been overall happier and more fulfilled. I am now in the twilight of my corporate career but the principles I learned in "Office Politics" are helping me now as I manage a graceful exit from a sinking company in order to go to the next stage in my life.

What your parents taught you may have been nice ways to get along with people but won't cut it in the corporate world. I suggest getting real-world facts from "Office Politics" so you understand what is really going on and can deal with it effectively to get what you want from your career.

I have been lucky enough to say I found the book at a young age-right out of college. I have read the book cover to cover twice and implemented the principles into my daily life, especially work life! I can say that the book has helped me increase my income 4 fold in 2 years by following the simple principles layed out in Office Politics. I didn't work extra hours, I didn't get a degree. What is even better about this book is that it helps clarify many aspects of life from friendships to work and even politics in Washington. Once you get an understanding of how politics works everything becomes clearer, like being legally blind and finally getting a pair of glasses. It allows you to see everything around you clearly and concisely.

This is one of the very few qualitative studies of Muslim women in the diaspora - and it's by a muslim woman too. We've had so many Geraldine Brookses that a Shahnaz Khan is a huge relief. The writer examines several Canadian muslim immigrant women's identities (interviews) using the notion of "third space" because Muslim women do not fit into existing categories in North America. I recommend this book.

Lawrence “Larry” C. Rubin, PhD, ABPP, LMHC, RPT-S, is a Professor of Counselor Education at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, where he directs the Mental Health Counseling Program and is a private practice psychologist, professional counselor, and play therapist. Dr. Rubin, past president of the Florida Association for Play Therapy, currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for Play Therapy. Dr. Rubin’s research interests and publications lie at the intersection of psychology and popular culture. He is a prolific writer and editor. His book, Psychotropic Drugs and Popular Culture: Medicine, Mental Health and the Media, won the 2006 Ray and Pat Browne Award for Best Anthology. This book is just another way for the writers to make a quick buck. The case studies in the text are neither thorough nor applicable to large swaths of the clientele that one is likely to encounter. Overpriced and unwarranted. Buy an older version.

Excellent introduction and something more

This book presents an excellent introduction to the subject, but also goes beyond that, presenting with a fair amount of the detail the theory of Priestley representation. The excercises start at the basic level of checking the understanding of definitions, allowing the reader to build confidence out of the practice. The fact that Priestley herself co-authored it is definitely a plus.

Lattice Theory Uber Alles?Begin here

A set with, at minimum, one binary operation is a groupoid. If a situation involves an equivalence relation or some sort of symmetry, some sort of groupoid applies. If the set has, at minimum, two binary operations, and one operation distributes over the other, you have a ringoid. Ringoids, which include the real field we all use every day, tell us much about number systems.

Let there be a groupoid. Denote its single binary operation by concatenation. Let that operation commute and associate. So far, we have a commutative semigroup. Now add idempotency, so that AA=A. With that seemingly trivial axiom we turn a corner, farewell the groupoids, and find ourselves among the semilattices.

Now let there be two binary operations, + and *, that commute and associate. Moreover, assume that A*(A+B) = A = A+(A*B). A*A=A=A+A is now an easy theorem. What you now have is a lattice, of which the best known example is Boolean algebra (which requires added axioms). More generally, most logics can be seen as interpretations of bounded lattices. Given any relation of partial or total order, the corresponding algebra is lattice theory. Nevertheless, far fewer mathematicians specialize in lattices than in groupoids and ringoids.

Davey and Priestley has become the classic introduction to lattice theory in our time. Sad to say, it has little competition. It is a bit harder than I would prefer, and the authors do not say enough about the value of lattice theory for nonclassical logic. Their book is a classic nonetheless, and here's hoping that Gian Carlo Rota was right when he said that the 21st century shall be the century of lattices triumphant.

Lattice theory is largely due to the work of the American Garrett Birkhoff, writing in the 1930s. He gets my vote for the

greatest American mathematician of all time.

Roman history that is truly relevant

Classicist Thomas F Madden has seen the light. He realized after 9-11 that academics have a larger role to play in society than ivory tower occupiers. Since 9-11 he has consciously striven to help people understand the past and how it can help us determine the context in which we make some monumental decision in the present. While he still writes and publishes for academics, he has included the lay person and politician in his circle and has tried to make ancient history relevant.
Such is the foundation of Empires of Trust--ancient history made accessible. After having taken two years of College Latin and Roman history my understanding of that great civilization was changed forever after finishing Madden's work. He wrote the book mainly out of the misunderstanding of Rome and its empire, which has been used by a flood of writers of late to compare what they see as the decline of the United States' Empire with the corruption and decline of the Roman Empire. For starters, he points out that all comparisons of the US with the late Roman Empire is somewhat of a stretch and much of the material written is absurd. For instance whatever one's feelings about President Bush the comparisons to him and the Roman Caesars is laughable:
"Claiming that President Bush or any other American president is a new Pompey or Augustus is simply the kind of frivolousness to be expected in a time of pax. It sells books and makes for good talk show fodder, but it is historically absurd. The men who overturned the Roman Republic did so by wielding raw military power against their own government. Sending the armed forces to Iraq(after a supporting congressional resolution) is one thing, sending them to Washington DC, is quite another. (p.125)"
Instead Madden argues that the empire the Romans had under the Republic before the Caesars offers better insight into the current American condition. He argues that both Rome and the US possessed and possesses an "Empire of Trust," and empire built on security and protection, not conquest. Contrary to popular myth, the Roman Republic gained an empire first because they did not want one and secondly to secure their "horizon." Because the Romans were distrustful of empire, their conquered enemies, which often became allies did so because they trusted Rome to wield such power responsibly. As they made alliances with people inside and just outside their sphere of influence they pledged to protect them. Thus when an ally was attacked, the Romans fought and further expanded their empire. The US is much the same way: distrustful of concentrated power and empire, but steps into the fray when their allies are threatened or national security warrants it. For the most part, the world has trusted the Untied States with that power. This is why the bulk of NATO's power and might comes from the US and why many nations feel they don't need to build up any armed forces at all, because they trust the US to protect them from any enemies and will not tolerate an attack by their neighbors. This argument is in direct contrast with Robert Kagan's thesis in "The Return of History and the End of Dreams," in which he sees a return to 19th century geopolitics, where neighboring nations militarize and threaten each other to get what they want.
In contrast to Kagan, Madden claims we are in an era of American Peace or Pax. Despite the terrorist problems, which he sees analogous to the Jewish radicals of the Roman Empire (a fight that took a long time to win but was won through understanding the religious nature of the conflict), we are more secure than ever. As a way to measure the peace he points to the anti-Americanism that is rampant throughout much of Europe and the Middle East. Ultimately, people talk bad about the US because they trust the US will use power responsibly. No one in their right mind would say the things that Hugo Chavez or some of the leaders of Europe have said if they really thought the US would use their immense might against them. Therefore the US Empire of Trust is robust because people know the US wields mighty power and they can attack it with words and not be destroyed.
Madden does not claim the US Empire of Trust will last, he doesn't give much advice on how to make it last but simply says that all empires pass away and if we are lucky enough to last as long as the Romans then so be it. Despite Madden's uncertainty about the future of the US, the book has an overall optimistic tone. By looking at that other unique empire in world history, namely the Roman Republican empire, we have reason to be optimistic. One thing is almost certain, that Americans will not give up this empire willingly, it will end out of necessity, not choice.

A Fresh Perspective

Most Americans don't like the idea of empires, myself included. But not all empires were of the purely conquest type. Madden offers a fresh look at how Rome grew to become the empire it did and how America is dealing with its own superpower status. He admits that the two are not similar in every way, but there are some similarities and common patterns that stand out. While I may not find what he has to offer as necessarily comforting, he does make some solid points.

Rome, as Madden argues, did not acquire an empire out of a desire to rule over other territories or to exploit their lands. Madden argues that Rome was merely interested in guaranteeing its own peace and security, which necessarily led to its expanding realm. It wanted allies, not enemies, and as a result Rome became a trusted power and was depended on by other states to safeguard their own security and their own way of life. Only in cases where Rome's adversaries posed ongoing threats did Rome find it necessary to destroy its rivals, such as Carthage, for example.

America also had and has a history of isolationist sentiment and has had to accept its role in the world, especially when its own security was threatened as in World War II. America became and remains a trusted power that doesn't seek to deprive other nations of their freedoms, as we ourselves cherish our own. This doesn't mean that other nations love us. To the contrary, because other nations expect us to act in a just fashion, do they feel they can verbally abuse us. If they thought we would deprive them of their sovereignty and destroy their way of life, do you think they would heap this verbal abuse on us? Most likely not. I agree with Madden on this point. Madden uses the Greeks behavior towards the Romans as an example.

Rome did not remain a republic throughout its history. It eventually did come under the rule of emperors, but there were customs and traditions that had been established that even an emperor had to acknowledge. While it is true that all powers do fall, Madden ably argues that those saying America is ready to collapse is a bit premature. Several of the Greek and Roman historians said the same thing about Rome, centuries before it ultimately fell.

Madden also delves into modern day issues such as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the War on Terror. He does get into a certain amount of political discourse, but I don't think its obsessively partisan. While readers may have some differing viewpoints on America's role in the world, and I don't always agree with the author, I find his historical knowledge gives his book weight and is important for what lessons it has to offer. An insightful book and certainly worth reading.

Special Case Empires

The US is often compared to historical empires, yet the comparison usually rings hollow. If we are an empire and we conquered a country that produces oil, how come fuel is so expensive? If we are truly imperialistic, why did our troops leave Germany after conquering it in WWI? Why give Japan back its independence after WWII?

In this book, Thomas F. Madden compares the US to Rome. Rome is considered the quintessential empire in the west because it ruled so much and survived for so long. Thomas F. Madden shows the differences between Rome and other empires in history.

He makes the case that during the time when the Romans conquered their empire (until about 140 BCE):

1. They did not want an empire.
2. They wanted safety, which required allies in a dangerous world.
3. Keeping those alliances required them to fight their allies' enemies.
4. Having conquered their enemies, the Romans often attempted to turn them into allies, rather than conquered territories.
5. By 140 BC they had implicit control of the entire Mediterranean area, yet still insisted on keeping up the charade of their relationships with other polities being alliances between equals.

This, by itself, would make this book worthy reading for anybody interested in the history of western civilization. But Thomas Madden goes further than that. He shows the parallels between Rome and the US, and the world Rome inhabited (Greeks and Jews) and the one the US inhabits (West Europeans and Muslims).

Anti-establishment 101

Rich are evil, corporations are bad, governments are bad, and religion is the worst. The conspiracy against renewable energies has doomed Earth. End of the world books have to be somewhat bleak, this one pretty much panned everything about the human race. The only good guys are adept at accepting other cultures, and have mixed race (conventions?) names for no rhyme or reason. There were no relationships really discussed, other than a transgender one, so all together the book came off as anti-establishment.
Technology level seemed weird. Interstellar colonization was possible, but stopping a fire, cleaning up trash, and preventing epidemics are not. A lot of emphasis placed on only one woman capable of running the world. Didn't really like anything about the book, no grammar or spelling mistakes was about its only positive.

Fast-paced, engaging story with fantastic world building and believable characters

It's been a long time since I've read a SciFi that was this entertaining and engaging. In Special Forces: FJ One Book 1, Adam Vance does a stellar job of building his world without leaving his readers either clueless or overwhelmed.

We are introduced to the Fallschirmj�ger, referred to as the FJ, or in their own nomenclature, the F*cking Jedi, just as one of the colonies whose development they are monitoring, decides to go rogue and attempt to overtake their host world. Captain Dieter Chen communicates with his team with futuristic communications and plans his rebuttal to the insurgency using technology encoded on his contact lenses. But, all this is described in a fluid, organic prose that takes the reader along for the ride.

And, it's an energetic, epic ride. The author, Adam Vance, does a stellar job of making the reader feel part of the action, rather than just an observer. This is a fast-paced, engaging story that has you turning pages, and leaning forward, eager for the next development, the next hill on the roller coaster. We are given the background on the failing Earth, which necessitates the colonization of foreign planets. To avoid the catastrophe on Earth being repeated elsewhere, the FJ are sheriff, judge, and jury. They are responsible for eradicating any threat that the new human colonies might pose to their host nations. And the FJ will use any method, whether that calls for diplomacy or countering violence with violence.

This was an amazing read, and while it had a satisfying ending, it was clearly the first installment in a series. This first offering from Adam Vance was an amazing start to what should be a fabulous series.

An epic story, marvelously told

I just finished both Scarcity and Artifice and I was blown away. I have been a sci-fi fan all my life and it has been years since I read something so well conceived. I admit that some of that is because I agree with most of the views on politics, the environment, climate change, and the oligarchic views of the far right.

But beyond that, this universe is so well thought out and researched. The plot moves as expected and is internally consistent with the universe the author has created. There is a few "ah ha moments" because of the AI character which sometimes behaves like an actual god but, generally, the action fits together without much "magical intervention."

I am a big fan of Isaac Asimov so those references really hit home for me. I have read most of Brad's/Adam's books now and he is a unique voice in M/M fiction, and now in speculative fiction. You can't go wrong with any of his books. Looking forward to the next installment!

Daniel P. Calvisi is a story consultant, screenwriter and the author of Story Maps: How to Write a GREAT Screenplay, Story Maps: 12 Great Screenplays, and Story Maps: The Films of Christopher Nolan (with William Robert Rich). He is a former Story Analyst for major studios like Twentieth Century Fox and Miramax Films. He teaches webinars on writing for film and television with The Writers Store and speaks at writing conferences. He holds a degree in Film and Television from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He lives in Los Angeles. Worth it for the case studies alone

This book is a fantastic resource for writers in all stages of their careers. Beginners will finally have the roadmap they've been looking for, and experienced writers will benefit from a solid analysis of what works and what doesn't in the era's most popular shows. One thing you WON'T find in other books of its kind is a set of case studies and beat sheets for shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Scandal, Walking Dead, and many others. These are invaluable in dissecting the structure of a well-crafted pilot--and can help you pin down when your own pilots may be falling short. Can't recommend this book enough.

Loved this book and appreciated the clarity and succinctness of the topics. Great current examples used as reference. Should be required reading for any writer, tv or feature.
