And the Reason for Publishing Is....?

Leonard, of course, is an acknowledged master of at least two genres: the western and the gritty urban crime novel. At some point in his career he wove in another genre, the dufus comic pop novel as the crimes migrated beyond Detroit to Hollywood and Florida. The earlier characters could be somewhat archetypal -- or, more critically -- stock, but without losing their archetypal flavor the later characters, like Rylans, were deliberately exaggerated and individualized.

I'm beginning this review a little off the subject of the stories in the current collection to remind myself how good and special Leonard's writing came to be because these early (?) stories range from predictable to embarrassingly awful. They were either apprentice work or, if they were later (many of them aren't even dated so who knows?) they were efforts -- as an other reviewer noted -- that deserved to stay in the drawer.

Every good artist produces bad work from time to time. It's inevitable because the only way you get better is by practicing your art and no matter who you are the statistics catch up with you. Produce enough masterpieces like Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and "In a Silent Way" and eventually there will be "Doo-Bop."

There are a few reasons for ever letting this stuff see the light after the artist's death. One is that when an artist is important enough -- and Leonard is surely sufficiently important for this to apply -- scholars can better understand the artist by seeing what failure looks like. Younger writers can see how Leonard's mature career developed from a genre novelist's rather ordinary beginnings --through immense amounts of practice. And also, I suppose, completists (and I'm not one) who love an artist enough want to get all they can.

But the value of this book is seriously diminished because of what I have to suspect is a cynical and unworthy motive--publishing every last drop to maximize profit. If Harper Collins had something better in mind, why the casual omission of any biographical materials that would have explained the circumstances of each story. Many of them are even undated, which is taking casual all the way to shoddy. I'm guessing the dated stories were published but not later collected and that the undated stories were never published at all. Regarding them, were they ever submitted to a publisher? More than once? Were there just rejection slips or no record of what happened at all or did any of the publisher's readers respond personally with something that Leonard readers might have found interesting. What did Leonard think about these stories eventually being collected and published? Some writers don't want their failures published ever, others have a more tolerant view.

All and all, from a scholarly perspective, this collection fails almost entirely. And lacking a scholarly justification for publishing it, Harper Collins and the estate would have served Leonard (and book buyers generally) better by keeping these off the market. These stories aren't going to diminish Leonard's reputation, finally, but they do diminish Harper Collins'.

How could you do this to us?

Elmore Leonard has been my favorite author for decades. His books line my walls. I have given many more away to friends. This book of things that he chose not to publish should have remained right where he left them. This stuff isn't fit to pirnt. To all the budding authors I've worked with over the years who were never published, I have to say that none of you ever presented anything for review to our groups that was this poor. The great news is that Leonard went from this terrible stuff to some really great work and a long career as a very entertaining writer.

Adjust your Expectations: Mediocre Elmore Leonard is still better than most

The stories here are very uneven. Some of them just seem like first drafts that were forgotten but a few are quite engrossing. I think all the bad reviews are because people expect this to be as good as most of what Leonard writes, which doesn't make a lot of sense given these stories were all unpublished. If you are an Elmore Leonard fanatic like me and have read everything he's ever written then I think this is definitely worth reading. If not, then there are many better short novels and stories to start with. I would recommend: Ride the Rap, Pronto, La Brava, just off the top of my head as some great Leonard novels to start with.

Chick lit from the Arabian desert

Desperate in Dubai is the debut novel of a writer from Dubai who tells the story of four very different women leading different lives in Dubai. The four main characters are Lady Luxe, an Emirati heiress who is trying to break free from her culture, Laila a beautiful Lebanese woman who is struggling to find a husband, Sugar a British Indian girl who is trying to get away from her past and Nadia a woman who is coming to terms with her cheating husband.

At times the book is a little cliche and over the top but that is also what I love about it because Dubai can be cliche and over the top. It talks about issues that Muslim and Arab women face with ease and respect. It is funny, thought provoking, witty and sometimes sad as well. While it does not shy away from topics such as love, romance, family and cultural issues, secret marriages, drugs and sex, somehow it is not graphical either.

Being from Dubai myself, it was amazing being able to read a book that talks about the unique scenarios and issues of living here that you just don't understand unless you live in the Middle East. If you are not from Dubai you will enjoy learning about life in the Desert.

Page-turner!

I was an avid reader of the blog before Mrs. Hakawati got her book deal and I've been trying for months to get the book as it's not sold in this country (yet!). After finally receiving it I read this 500-odd page book in two days! Would have been less if it wasn't for my life getting in the way; make sure you have a good 4/5 hours of free time once you reach the middle of the book because you will not be able to put it down until it's done!

The book centers on four main characters, only two of which know each other at the beginning of the book. As the story progresses their lives are intertwined in unchangeable ways. At times I did feel like no way would this happen in real life, but then again, it is Dubai! Life here in the Gulf is so complicated that the unbelievable becomes normal and Desperate in Dubai illustrates that so eloquently. I recommend anyone who likes drama and lots of characters to pick it up, it will be time well spent!

A MUST MUST READ GIRLS !! LOVED IT

Ameera al Hakawati must write more books. I picked this book from Spinneys in Dubai. I have to stay I loved it so much that I couldn't put the Book down which resulted in me finishing the book in less than three days and all my housework left behind ..Lol.,.
The book revolves around lives of four diffrent types of women who live, love and labour in the dazzling Dubai. I always wanted to know how the Emirati women live and this book delivers.
I couldn't help jotting and googling the fashion brands too which were mentioned quite a lot in this book and the hotspots where to go.
I enjoyed this book for its fun and spicy nature, I think every women could probably relate to at least one of the characters in the story.
This book is definately a must read you sure won't be disappointed and won't get bored reading this.
Can't wait for your next book Ms Hakawati !!

In Taking [A]part, John McCarthy and Peter Wright consider a series of boundary-pushing research projects in human-computer interaction (HCI) in which the design of digital technology is used to inquire into participative experience. McCarthy and Wright view all of these projects -- which range from the public and performative to the private and interpersonal -- through the critical lens of participation. Taking participation, in all its variety, as the generative and critical concept allows them to examine the projects as a part of a coherent, responsive movement, allied with other emerging movements in DIY culture and participatory art. Their investigation leads them to rethink such traditional HCI categories as designer and user, maker and developer, researcher and participant, characterizing these relationships instead as mutually responsive and dialogical.

McCarthy and Wright explore four genres of participation -- understanding the other, building relationships, belonging in community, and participating in publics -- and they examine participatory projects that exemplify each genre. These include the Humanaquarium, a participatory musical performance; the Personhood project, in which a researcher and a couple explored the experience of living with dementia; the Prayer Companion project, which developed a technology to inform the prayer life of cloistered nuns; and the development of social media to support participatory publics in settings that range from reality game show fans to on-line deliberative democracies.
