About the Author
Peter Raven is a researcher and teacher at University of North Texas Health Science Center. He is a widely published and well-known researcher in the area of cardiorespiratory responses to exercise. Among numerous recognitions and awards, in 2006 Peter received a lifetime achievement award for the body of his research at the Frontiers of Cardiology meeting. He received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Oregon in Eugene and was awarded an NIH Post-Doctoral Training Fellowship in Exercise Physiology at the Institute of Environmental Stress at the University of California at Santa Barbara. In his tenure at UCSB he received some one million dollars in research funding and published 30 peer reviewed articles as first author and co-author on the environmental effects of heat, cold and air pollution on exercise performance. In 1975 - 1977 Dr. Raven developed a program of Environmental Physiology at the Institute of Aerobic Research. Subsequently he served as an Chair of the Department of Integrative Physiology at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM)/1993-UNTHSC. Currently he is Professor of Integrative Physiology and Orthopedics. During his career he has served as a Visiting Professor/Consultant to the Division of Cardiology's Space Physiology Laboratory at UT Southwestern, the Institute of Exercise and Environmental Medicine at Presbyterian Hospital/UT Southwestern and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was awarded the ACSM Citation Award in 1995, the Korr award for Basic Science Research in the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in 2001, and the Benjamin L. Cohen Outstanding Research award of the AOA in 2006. In 2011 he was awarded the American Physiological Society's Exercise and Environmental Section's Honor award.

David H. Wasserman received a BSc and an MSc from UCLA in Kinesiology in 1979 and 1981. He obtained his PhD in Physiology in 1985 at the University of Toronto under the guidance of Mladen Vranic MD, DSc. He continued his training in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where he received fellowships from the NIH and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 1987 and was appointed to full professor in 1997. In 2001 he became the Founding Director of the Vanderbilt-NIH Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center. In that capacity he and his colleagues have developed and applied physiological tools to study diabetes, obesity, and metabolism in genetically modified mice. In 2007 he was named the Ron Santo Chair in Diabetes Research and in 2010 he was named the Annie Mary Lyle Professor of Molecular Physiology and Diabetes. He has published over 160 papers and more than 25 book chapters. Dr. Wasserman is a longstanding and active member of the American Diabetes Association, American Physiological Society, and American College of Sports Medicine. He served as Chair of the Council on Exercise of the American Diabetes Association from 1999-2001 and Chair of the Steering Committee of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Section of The American Physiology Society from 1997-2001. Honors Dr. Wasserman has received include the Henry Pickering Bowditch Award (1997) and Solomon A. Berson Award from the American Physiology Society (2008), the C.R. Park Award for Excellence in Research from Vanderbilt University (2010), and an NIH M.E.R.I.T Award (2008).

William Squires currently has his bachelors and masters for Texas State University and his PhD in Exercise Physiology for Texas AM University and Baylor College of Medicine in Cardiac Rehabilitation where he was certified both as an ACSM Exercise Specialist and as a Program Director. Dr Squires's next stop was at the Johnson Space Center working in the Cardiopulmonary Lab performing crew pre flight testing for STS 1. Dr Squires then accepted a position at Texas Lutheran University dual appointed in Biology and Kinesiology where he holds the Dr Fredrick C. Elliot Chair in Health Fitness and Nutrition. He holds adjunct positions at Baylor College of Medicine and at the University of North Texas Health Science Center . Dr Squires returned to NASA in 1989 to work in the Biomechanics Lab where he served of the Exercise Countermeasures Task which made recommendations to NASA for in-flight exercise programs for the shuttle program. Twice president of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine when in 2010, he received the chapters Honor Award. In 2008 Dr. Squires was awarded a sabbatical where he studied pediatric obesity at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Austin Texas. He now puts his scientific effort into working with disadvantage at-risk kid s in the Seguin Community.

Tinker Murray is a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University. He has served as Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center where he was twice recognized for his exceptional performance. He has been at Southwest Texas and Texas State University since 1984 and served as the Director of Employee Wellness from 1984-88, and Director of the Exercise Performance Laboratory from 1984-2000. From 1985-88 Tinker was a sub-committee member for the Governor's Commission on Physical fitness that developed the Fit Youth Today Program. Tinker has been a lecturer and examiner for the USA Track and Field Level II Coaching Certification Program (1988 - 2008). He served as the Vice Chair of the Governor's (for Governor Ann Richards) Commission for Physical Fitness in Texas from 1993-94. Tinker is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and certified as an ACSM Program Director. He is a former two-time president of the Texas regional chapter of ACSM (1987 & 1994). He served on the national ACSM Board of Trustees from 1998-2001. Dr. Murray served on a five-year study intervention (HEALTHY) as a Co-I (Roberto Trevino, M.D., PI) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prevent Type-2 diabetes in middle school minority students in San Antonio, TX and nationwide. The HEALTHY Study group has recently (2010) reported the key findings of the intervention in The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Murray has worked with the Professional Development Cooperative (PDC) in coordination with the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and D.W. Rutledge (Executive Director) since 2003 to promote continuing education experiences for coaches. He has authored or co-authored several books, refereed journal articles, edited articles, and published abstracts.

Clear, well-written textbook full of solid science

This textbook, written by deans in the field of exercise science, is ideal for an undergraduate course. The text is clear, unambiguous, and accurate, the illustrations provide enrichment to the important and abundant points conveyed in the text, and the teaching materials are well-designed and immediately useful.

This book would also help physicians in sports medicine and those in practice of kinesiology, because it contains the recent and relevant information in the field in the context of the challenge of the obesity and type II diabetes mellitus epidemic.

Only of Historical Interest

Potential readers should be aware that this book is unlike any of the novels for which Lloyd Douglas is famous. It was published more than twenty years before his bestsellers, when he was newly graduated from Wittenberg College's divinity school. It is of historic interest because it was written just before he committed his life to an updating of the faith, to meet the demands of the modern age. There is nothing modern in this book, and there is very little in it that is even of earthly interest. The hero of the story is an angel, and much of the action occurs in the heavens. All the dialogue is in Elizabethan English.

Nevertheless, there is something wondrous about Douglas's narrative voice in this book. It has a strange cadence, like poetry. The landscape of the story is also more grand and sweeping than in any of his later novels, since it takes us beyond the material world. And it is fascinating to read his account of what happens to the devil and his army of mutinous angels - this from an author who, later on, was quite passionate about denying the existence of a devil. If you think you know Lloyd Douglas, this slender book is full of surprises.

It is a difficult book to read, however, and most readers would be best advised to avoid it. But for those who respect the mind of Lloyd Douglas and want to trace his evolution as a religious thinker and as a popular writer, it may be well worth the effort.

Poor eBook Implementation

I have the Kindle version. Very difficult to look up a surgery. The table of contents contains too many repetitions of headings like diagnosis, definitions, prognosis... repeatedly listed over and over. No human helped to set the ebook version or edit it. There is an index to make up for poor table of contents. Very expensive for a poor implementation of a good hardcover.

A must have if you want to be a vet surgeon

For me this is one of the best books concerning everything that comes before surgery, during and after surgery. This book is well illustrated and it makes it easier to understand the content. This book is easy to read, even though it is pretty thorough, it's not one of those books which makes you exhausted from reading.
It came in excellent condition, still wrapped in plastic from the distributor.

Fossum is easy to read and navigate. It is an excellent text for the veterinary hospital, no matter what stage of your training. I enjoy the step-by-step instructions and the anesthesia protocols. And the ophthalmology section is a great resource for common eye surgeries.

The Russian Revolution as Witnessed by the US Ambassador

David R.Francis was the mayor of St Louis, the Governor of Missouri, U.S. Secretary of the Interior and finally the U.S. ambassador to Russia for 5 years from March 1916 to March 1921.

He was appointed to his ambassadorship by Woodrow Wilson and made a point of committing all official and unofficial interviews and incidents to paper immediately after they happened to provide a true and faithful record of events in his dispatches to Washington.

This book was derived from his notes so it has a rather irregular flow as he makes a determined effort to include all the relevant details. The result is an invaluable first hand account of the Russian revolution(s) from a uniquely placed American who had personal contact with Lenin, Trotsky, Kerensky, Rodzianko, Miliukoff and almost all the other leading actors.

The text is of great value for anyone remotely interested in the Russian revolution and is full of surprises:

Trotsky arrived in Russia from New York's East Side and Lenin arrived via Germany and Switzerland. With regard to Lenin, General William Hoffmann, the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Army of Germany admitted after the war that they had funded and sent Lenin to Russia to destabilize the Russian army and that he honestly, "...never knew or foresaw the danger to humanity from the consequences of this journey of the Bolsheviks to Russia."

It's true that Germany's launch of Lenin had considerable success as he unilaterally issued General Order N�1 as the self appointed head of the Council of Soldiers and Workingmen's Deputies (ignoring the Provisional Government) commanding all military units to remove their existing officers and elect new ones. This was coupled with promises to stop the war and give all peasant soldiers their own private farms, which predictably went down very well with them and wrecked army discipline. The Bolsheviks and Germany eventually signed the Brest-Litovsk Peace treaty in March 1918 allowing Germany to move over 100 divisions to the West resulting in the further loss of hundreds of thousands of French, British and American soldiers' lives.

Probably the most interesting part of this first class book is Francis' analysis of the failure of the Provisional Government in the face of Bolshevik extremism.

He was well disposed towards the original Russian revolutionaries as they surprisingly peacefully displaced the Czarist autocracy and promoted a constitutional monarchy (Rodzainko and Miliukoff) or a republic (Kerensky) based on a democratic Constituent Assembly allowing all Russians to vote for their new government. This accorded with American Democratic ideas and he sent a cable to the U.S. government saying, "This revolution is the practical realization of the principle of government which we have championed and advocated - I mean government by consent of the governed".

However, the problems started almost immediately as the Bolsheviks revealed their very different character. As Francis said, "The Bolshevik leaders here, most of whom are Jews and 90% of whom are returned exiles, care little for Russia or any other country but are internationalists and they are trying to start a worldwide social revolution."

In the event the Provisional Government failed and he saw the following principal reasons:

- From the start the Bolsheviks worked to subvert the loyalty of the 125.000 soldiers in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) with promises of private land, farms, stopping the war, avoiding the return of landowners etc. with the result that only 25.000 or so remained loyal to the Provisional Government.

- The Bolsheviks unilaterally issued General Order N�1 producing chaos in the army and weakening a force that could have been used against them.

- As the leader of the internationally accepted Provisional Government, Kerensky (also Jewish) could have arrested Lenin and Trotsky when they proclaimed that all people with property who refused to hand it over should be immediately killed. In the event he did nothing.

- Francis knew Kerensky well and saw him as more of an orator than a statesman, with his most fatal error (among others) being his argument with Korniloff, the Commander in Chief of the Russian forces. They planned to combine to remove the Bolsheviks but on Korniloff's request to be made head of the government, Kerensky foolishly ordered his arrest, and Korniloff replied by declaring his intention of marching on Petrograd. He never did but it didn't stop Kerensky arming the Bolshevik workingmen's and soldiers committee to defend Petrograd from the attack that never came.

- The Bolsheviks of course used the arms against the Provisional Government, and when the elections to the Constituent Assembly eventually came (far too late) at the end of November 1917, the Bolsheviks filled the assembly hall with soldiers armed with rifles, grenades and machine guns and rejected the result of the vote (Social Revolutionaries 20,893,743, Bolsheviks 9,023,963 out of 36.257.960 votes cast). The Bolsheviks declared that Constitutional Democrats were to be arrested and Lenin established his dictatorship.

With the empty statement, "The Soviet Republic represents not only a higher form of Democratic institution, but it is also the sole form which renders possible the least painful transition to Socialism", Lenin set in train the greatest system of organized mass murder that the world had ever seen (at least 15 million lives in the estimate of Robert Conquest), and lest the world forget, this human abattoir was largely directed by Jews ( NKVD heads Genrikh Yagoda and Yakov Agranov, and all the heads of the Gulag death camps, Aron Solts, Yakov Rappoport, Lazar Kogan, Matvei Berman and Naftaly Frenkel + Lazar Kaganovich killing at least 3 million Ukrainian farmers in the winter of 1932-33).

Stalin awarded the Bolshevik Jews a special protected status in Russia (until 1937) as recorded in Slezkine's recent book , "The Jewish Century" and he documents in some detail the way in which the new Jewish "revolutionary" bourgeoisie enjoyed their new country dachas, worship of Pushkin and attendance at elite educational academies (the inspiration behind George Orwell's book, "Animal Farm").

"Progressive" U.S. academics don't like this book and it is fairly obvious why.

Kindle is not grad school friendly

I bought all my books in e book form, four from kindle and seven on a different app. I originally bought this book in kindle because it was less expensive but it was a huge mistake. The lack of page numbers is a huge problem and the missing tables, figures, and information is ridiculous. The "Loc" numbers aren't consistent by any means either. I could site a page, look through other chapters, then go back to the Loc I cited and the info I had originally sited was no longer there. It had moved. I never again will buy a book from kindle.

Very poor picture quality, good information

Terribly disappointed in this book, I found a far superior version of this ebook on inkling with better pictures and search options. Come on Kindle, you should be the market leader in ebooks. I should be able to expect the best quality available, not this disappointingly fuzzy, poorly searchable second rate product.
The book is a good book in the print version but unless kindle can do much better than this I would stay away from the kindle edition.

Great textbook, just don't get it on kindle

I really like this textbook, but don't get the kindle edition. I was not able to effectively search within the textbook. Page numbers were not written on the pages. Fortunately I received a free refund from Amazon and ordered a print copy.

About the Author
Joseph Kerba was born in Cairo, on June 3, 1942. He went to Saint-George's College, in Heliopolis, Egypt, run by Irish Fathers. He holds degrees in both Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and acted as a Licensed Pharmacist in Quebec, Canada.

He immigrated to Canada in 1967. He is married and has four children and six grandchildren. Joseph led two major pharmaceutical companies in Canada, as Vice-President and General Manager, before starting his own consulting firm, Kerbapharm, Inc. He still accepts lecturing assignments, debates and other activities, sharing his knowledge and views with University intelligentsias, politicians, and through other venues.
