nominated for a Pulitzer in 1984

I'm considering auditioning for a local rendition of this play, so was a bit concerned when I read a previous very negative review. I just want to point out that this play was nominated for a Pulitzer prize and was an Off-Broadway hit. Search the web for the reviews of it in the New York Times and the Washington Post. It sounds as if it's an extraordinary play and I'm just going to discount the words of the person who read it and disliked it in 2003.

Update after reading the play: this is one of the most touching portrayals of family dynamics I've ever read. I had tears in my eyes in the final scene. The characters are all likable and interesting, from the artist daughter come home to help her parents move out of their lifelong home, to the loving intellectual dad who's beginning to lose his grip, to the flamboyant yet grounded mom who wants daughter to understand that life with daddy ain't all roses these days. Loved this play from page 1 to the end. Touching without being cloyingly sweet.

If you have an advanced community theater looking for a small cast, single set show utilizing older actors, this is an excellent choice. Fanny and Gardner Church are an elderly couple about to move from their Beacon Hill home to Cape Cod. Gardner and Fanny are both from well to do high society families. They ask their daughter Mags to help them move, Gardner is a retired Pulitzer prize winning poet who is slipping onto senility and has a problem with incontinence. Fanny fights to keep them afloat and deals with Gardner's problem with humor which offends Mags who mistakes it for cruelty. A talented artist on the brink of fame herself, Mags has always believed her parents never saw the talents she has. She hopes to confront these feelings by painting their portrait. Similar in theme to ON GOLDEN POND this play is wonderfully warm as it explores family relationships. Poignant and funny, PAINTING CHURCHES provides three wonderful roles for three experienced actors

Got this for a monologue I had to do for an acting class and absolutely loved the play!!! Would love to see it performed one day, or even be in the play.

Hunting and Trapping Nirvana found here

It's my understanding that as of this review, our main character Mr Sidney Huntington is still with us and soon to be honored, along with the co author, at a University of Alaska graduation ceremony. He's 90 years old God bless him. I'd be proud to shake his hand after reading this wonderful book.

The author wrote this book I think for many reasons. One big one is that he had a little Brother named James (Jimmy) who wrote a very good book many years before this one called "On the Edge of Nowhere". If you are going to read them both (which you should) start with Jimmy's book. This book is a little better in my opinion. But they are both terriffic!

Jimmy's book had a few inaccuracies that Sidney cleared up as they shared most of their youth. They were half Indian half white kids who both grew up to be quite accomplished. In Sidney's case he seems to have met with some financial success through his hard work and entreprenuerial spirit as well. Jimmy won some big sled dog races and was successful in many ways too. They both served in elected or appointed positions and helped to make Alaska a better state.

There were just so many great stories.

My favorite story was about his Uncle and Aunt who brought Sidney Beaver hunting in Winter the Indian way. They blocked up escape routes and chopped through the top of the Den. Then his Aunt went into the Den and passed the live Beavers out to her Husband who dispatched them with a club. There is more to it than that of course. You must hand out the Beavers in a certain order and must talk to them a certain way. You'll have to read this to get the details. I hope this intrigues you because I thought it was pretty cool.

How about the old Indian way of Hunting Grizz? First of all you go secretly. No one must know. And you can't call the animal a bear because that is disrespectful. If anyone, especially a wife finds out your plans, you must cancel. When you do finally sneak away with your few companions you might be gone for a few months and frankly you may never come back. You have to stand near a den entrance with the butt end of your spear planted in the ground, showing no fear while a huge Grizzley comes rushing at you cause you disturbed his slumber. You hope he comes the right way and must be pure of soul so God will grant you this prize. If he does, you may never talk about the hunt because that is disrespectful. Amazing!

Really interesting history, rituals and sociology are included in these tales that are related in a very relaxed and readable way. If you ever wondered how those Trappers survived living in the middle of nowhere, or you ever wanted to do it yourself, you'll probably like this book.

I wish there was a sequel. It was just a great story.

A Must Have Guide for any Marriage Mentoring Program

As a Marriage Mentor, I feel that the materials are well thought out, easy to work with and are clear and concise. The guide is the perfect road map for helping couples as the approach their upcoming marriage. It is amazing how open and honest couples can be while working through the work book. The "Together Forever" guide book for mentors is a must have for anyone who is mentoring couples. My husband and I have so enjoyed using the guide and have helped couples and in doing so have improved our own marriage.

Awesome resource for premarital mentoring

Together Forever is a wonderful resource for engaged couples to use along with a mentor couple to prepare for a lifelong Christian marriage. The Mentor's guide has practical insight to guide a mentor couple. My husband and I have used the curriculum several times as we mentor engaged couples.

A great book. My wife and I, after 21 years of marriage, were ready to throw in the towel (actually, she was ready to throw it in, I had kind of got used to how bad it was). This book saved our marriage and our relationship now is better than it has ever been. Great program!

From Wikipedia: Old Wicked Songs is a two character play written by Jon Marans whose work received a nomination for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. Other works by Marans include A Strange and Separate People, Jumping for Joy, Legacy of the Dragonslayers and the musical Irrationals, (music by Edward Thomas). Old Wicked Songs was first produced by Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. It was later produced in New York city and by Daryl Roth and Jeffrey Ash with The Barrow Group at the Promenade Theatre on August 16, 1996. Marans' play was later produced in England at the Bristol Old Vic and was later moved to the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End. Between March 31 and May 10, 2008, it was produced at its venue city, in Vienna's English theatre in Austria.

Inexpensive to produce. Two fully realized characters, one set. The effect on the audience is electric; the effect on the performers even more so. Buy it. Read it. Produce it.

Phenomenal book from a very insightful and gifted author!

This is one of the best books/plays I have ever read. The author has great ability to take a tremendously painful subject, treat it with the respect it deserves, and show how his two vastly different characters can educate each other and learn from each other in many difficult but tender moments. The ribbons of circumstance, personalities, experiences, pain, talent, and, in the end, joy, flow through the story and finally come to parallel placements using Robert Schumann's composition, Dichterliebe, to gently weave through it and eventually pull it all together. Marans has given his two characters a good sense of humor to help cushion the pain. I learn something different each time I read through this book or even parts of it. I am a better, more empathetic person for reading this book and seeing the play.

Deep, believable, moving, amazing, and great!

I've seen the play twice and read the book. What a beauty! I've never seen a play before that took so little time for exposition or that gave us the necessary facts in such a natural way. The characters were interesting and their interaction was fascinating. Anyone who has ever been part of a superb teacher-student combination will adore this play. I felt I'd been waiting for it for years.
