A Decent Value

It seems to me that the individual volumes are of about the same quality as one another, so here is my general review for the set:

The back matter clarifies who the audience is intended to be: “Helps beginners to develop a solid understanding of fundamental opening ideas. Gives casual players the ability to choose the opening that suits their style and taste. A tool for club players to test and review their opening repertoire. A reference to which advanced player keep returning.” As a club who has unofficially become advanced (possibly near Expert strength), I don’t know that I will be returning to this set except for when I begin using new openings, but this set is very good for giving some of the ideas in certain lines. Any inkling that these volumes are sparse on explanations is not far off. I have complained to myself in a number of places in the text about the omission of an explanation for moves. I think the set does a good job of commenting effectively on most of the critical moves in lines. There are a number of things I like about this set and some things that I don’t like, but, overall, I think you are getting a decent value out of these, if you are using them to begin the learning process or want a compendious reference set. I have waited really until very late to begin learning openings, and so I can’t say for sure, but it seems to me that this set is fairly exhaustive over all openings and variations. For this reason, the expansiveness of the volumes, one cannot expect in-depth commentary from relatively so few pages, especially considering that the volumes include games to illustrate the openings. The illustrative games are one of my complaints about this set. There is no explanation given on the moves in the illustrative games. For this reason, I highly, highly, highly recommend that opening-learners use this set in tandem with Everyman’s “Starting Out” series for the openings that you want to play in tournament games. That is to say, this set is not a one-stop-shop for tournament-strength players. However, if you want to get an idea of how play lines that you have no interest in studying, this is a great set. It elaborates in a way that most wish the “Modern Chess Openings” would. In that way, this is much better than the ever-cryptic MCO, though the MCO has more lines evaluated, if you are looking to do your own research and want to be a little creative in your next tournament.

The text in these books is fantastic. The pages are nice to look at, they have clear printing, and make use of different colors in text and in the diagrams to highlight and emphasis different ideas or key things to pay attention to. If you are familiar with the aesthetically pleasing nature of Lev Alburt’s later books, and you like those, then it is worth knowing that these volumes are on about the same par. My only complaint with the text is that the authors denote where every piece is coming from in addition to where it is going. For example, the first two moves for white in the Sicilian are written as “e2-e4” and “Ng1-f3.” I found this horribly annoying and distracting, sometimes making the wrong piece moves on the board or in my head, because I tend to glance at the book to determine move orders. I imagine that they’ve done this to better serve the beginner, causal, and weaker club players, because the cost of the extra ink must have been noticeable in their bottom line.

In short, the set is a good companion for studying openings for USCF/FIDE tournament play, but it could be a good one-stop-shop for beginners and casual players who seek less explanation than upper-level club and advanced players desire.

The annual one-day conference at St Bride Library in Bride Lane (off Fleet Street) has become a popular fixture in London's graphic calendar, tackling themes such as magazine design and (most recently, in January 2010) music. The Form of the Book Book is a modest record and souvenir of the 2009 event.

Each talk is a chapter, and most work well on the page. There's a scholarly account of Le Corbusier as book designer, and a memoir of working with Herbert Spencer in the 1970s from Chrissie Charlton (above right). Armand Mevis's 'Every Book Starts with an Idea' is more preface than complete piece, and an interview with Bob Stein (about the future of the book) is a little opaque. The most rewarding chapters are by Richard Hollis and James Goggin.

Hollis's 'Ways of Seeing Books' begins with Gyorgy Kepes's views on the use of the book. After a brief swipe at Bruce Mau and Phaidon, he describes his manner of working with John Berger on G. before berating Penguin for their treatment of the reissue of his innovative, still radical book design for Berger's Ways of Seeing.

Goggin's 'The Matta-Clark Complex' is a good-humoured critique of the temptations that await the unwary (or over-ambitious) designer. This 'Complex' denotes the way designers create books whose form apes and competes with the content. Art books about the late Gordon Matta-Clark, known for his 'building cuts', make ideal case studies. Goggin's thoughtful conclusions demonstrate why he is one of the most interesting designers of his generation.

It was okay

This was just okay. I liked that this involved a pretty unique shifter but other than a crazy ex-boyfriend him being rare was never really an issue. This book was more about his inability to believe that people could be genuine friends and want him for him and no other reason. I enjoyed the story but there was just something lacking.

Same format and content as the larger book with the polar bear on the cover!

This "international" version has exactly the same content as the larger book with the polar bear on the cover, but at a lower price. Of course, the page numbers are not the same as the larger book, but I found is super easy to find the content when my Professor quoted the text. It is smaller in size too, which makes it SO much easier to take in your backpack when the book is needed in class. Highly recommend this version!

Good intro to natural resource conservation

I used this text for a course on natural resource management. Overall, it's a good text with that hits on all the major areas of natural resource conservation, why it's important, what we are doing to the world, and ways to mitigate these impacts. It doesn't go into too much detail on any one area, but gives you enough info to understand the basic concepts to find resources that do provide more detail. My biggest complaint are the authors' use of advocacy language on certain topics, especially population and resource management in developing nations. They take a tone that clearly favors a certain way to handle certain environmental issues, instead of presenting mitigation techniques without bias. It made the book feel weaker, in my opinion.

Great Read (for a school text book)

I guess the title says it all 'Great Read (for a school text book)'

This was a book that was required for a class I took. I read it from cover to cover. I have to say - each chapter was well written and interesting. Each chapter addressed a different natural resource (for example air, freshwater, etc) including many I never considered (like top soil).

There is a newer edition out there. I contacted the publisher about an update. In hindsite I cannot believe that I, a simple minded student, would ask a publisher for an update! I guess that's just a testament to how interesting the book was, I was thinking perhaps maybe a pdf containing the 2 new chapters. The response I got was NO!

Now that the stink eye has been focused on the publisher, there was one point in the book that was a bit annoying. I did not like how the text kept refering to a picture or figure or graphic that almost always was on the next or the previous page turn. I guess that's the challange of the publisher and will always be a problem with the published medium.

OK ... so maybe I dont particularly care for the publishers, but it wont stop me from buying another book from them and this is still a great book.

About the Author

James P. Smith was appointed to the Philadelphia Fire Department on June 29, 1966. He was promoted to lieutenant on December 18, 1972; to captain on December 30, 1974; to battalion chief on August 3, 1981; and to deputy chief on June 27, 1987. Deputy chief is the highest fire department civil service position. Chief Smith reported to the deputy commissioner. He retired on July 7, 2007 and continues to lecture and write on firefighting.

He has worked on both engine and ladder companies and in every section of the city. He has served as director of the Philadelphia Fire Academy. In this role, he was the departmental Safety Officer and responded on multiple alarm fires performing the Safety Officer’s function. Additional areas of responsibility included the research and planning unit.

Chief Smith has been associated with the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, since 1982. He is a graduate of the prestigious Executive Fire Officer’s Program and is an adjunct instructor. He has developed and taught many programs.

He has lectured throughout the United States on incident management, safety, church fires, building construction, building collapse, strategy and tactics, incident command systems, tank farm fires, and high-rise firefighting.

Waste of my money and time

I waited until I read the whole Ivy and Cullen series. I am having a hard time writing a good review of the books. In as much as I didn't like the books, because I thought they were poorly written and sometimes downright stupid... I kept buying them because I wanted to know the outcome. I read a lot of books. Mostly adult romance. Not all are good but most of them are great and I have re-read some a few times. But this series..... I won't be re-reading it. First to stretch it out to 12 books was just greedy. I paid $26.00 plus for a story that could have been condensed into one novel for less. I'll admit the sex was hot in the books but again there was no continuity in the writing. The storyline wasn't even plausible!!! It's a bad writers Fifty Shades of Grey!!! Anyway, I'm glad for the happy ending but it seems it was anticlimactic after everything they went through. Case in point..... Cullen is being investigated for killing a patient but yet with just a few hours notice he's back in an operating room doing brain surgery..,,, really!!!! Ok I said my piece. What hospital in their right mind would allow that??? There are a lot of writers out there. I love finding writers and reading new books but I hate wasting my hard earned money on sub-par writing so I'll continue with my favorites and know I'm getting a quality read!

Great books but way to much money for the length of the books

I thought these books had a very good storyline, I enjoyed Ivy and Cullens story alot. I don't think I will continue with Ivy's cousin tho because (the reason for my 3 star rating) they are not worth the cost of the books. They are way to short for the money. I paid .99 for the first 2 and then $2.99 for the next 10 and they are only 32 to 34 pages long. Got caught up in the story so I had to get them, but no more. You could put atleast 3 or 4 of them together for the $2.99 cost. Way to much money for so little book. Sorry would love to continue with the story but I just can't afford it and don't want to wait for a half hour read.

*** Book Twelve is pretty much the end of Ivy and Cullen's story. Book Thirteen begins a new storyline featuring Ivy's cousin, Lanie Day, who was introduced in this installment and billionaire playboy CEO, Brayden Forman which continues in Books Fourteen, Fifteen and concludes in Book Sixteen.

Cherish is the twelfth book in Kelly Favor's suspenseful The Billionaire's Rules Serial and it totally rocks! This is my very first experience with Favor's work but I must say, I'm impressed with what I've read so far. This is NOT a standalone story but rather a serial with sixteen installments so we all know what that mean.... dare I say it, cliffhangers - fifteen to be exact since Book 16 is the conclusion of The BIllionaire's Rules. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. What? Mr Sharpe presents Ivy with a choice but what will she decide??? She decides to decline his offer and leave his office but immediately regrets her decision. Ivy's indecision and inexperience torment her as she tries to resume her work. She is invited to a nearby bar for a drink after work with Lucas and several other coworkers. There is an altercation at the bar involving a very tipsy Ivy and a group of very obnoxious male patrons. The only friend she seems to have among her co-workers is Lucas who unsuccessfully tries to rescue her from their unwelcome advances. But just who arrives in time to come to Ivy's rescue? Why, handsome, hunky Cullen Sharpe, of course! Apparently, the mysterious Mr. Sharpe is very attracted to lovely, young, inexperienced Ivy and wants to do more than just discipline her at work. He spirits her away to his apartment where he rejects her after learning she is a virgin. What the heck? Ivy leaves and is more determined than ever to stay away from the fickle Mr Sharpe but can he stay away from Ivy? Apparently not! He insists that she attend a company luncheon at a nearby venue where she quite literally bumps into Xavier Montrose, President of Vellum Pharmaceuticals, a direct competitor of her boss' company, Biomatrix. And Xavier asks her for a date! Oh my! Cullen Sharpe witnesses the exchange and is furious. Oh my glory! Cullen Sharpe may not want her but apparently he doesn't want anyone else to have Ivy either? What is wrong with that man? What will Ivy do? Will she defy her Boss, otherwise known as Sir or Mr Sharpe as he's asked to be called, and accept a date with Xavier? I think not, at least not yet. Cullen Sharpe doesn't give her a chance. It looks as if the enigmatic Mr Sharpe can't stay away from Ivy and this time, he does the deed. That's right, Ivy is no longer a virgin! She spends the night with Cullen but when morning comes, he's back to his same cruel, arrogant self telling her that she should stay away from him. What is this guy's problem? But when Xavier is waiting outside the Biomatrix building for Ivy the next day and whisks her away for lunch, Cullen is absolutely livid. He marches into the restaurant and demands that Ivy leave immediately. And now, he showing up at Ivy's apartment in the middle of the night - uninvited! Oh my glory! Poor Ivy will soon be suffering from whiplash as a result of Cullen's mood swings and his off and on again behavior. He wants her, he doesn't want her, he wants her! But she can't turn him away! She's already in too deep! And I do mean emotionally and legally! OMG! Why is Xavier Montrose so interested in Ivy and just what is he up to??? Is the email he sent Ivy real and why did he send it? Hmmm...... And what exactly was Lucas doing in Emma Mark's office at her computer and why is he watching Ivy so closely??? After Ivy finally confronts Lucas for reading her email, Lucas delivers an unbelievable confession and a terrifying ultimatum to Ivy but is Lucas Hogan truly a FBI special agent and if so, why is he investigating Cullen Sharpe? Could there be a little corporate espionage happening at Biomatrix or murder? The truths, lies, consequences and threats are slowly taking an emotional and physical toll on Ivy. Ivy is threatened after someone sends her pictures of Cullen and her making love. The turmoil is too great and Ivy collapses while with Cullen. He takes her to his home to care for her where Ivy finally reveals the truth to Cullen? Ivy may be in danger and Cullen claims he has a way to protect her from everything - but only if she marries him! What??? Even after a quickie marriage in Vegas, the secrets and lies keep bombarding Ivy at every turn. Why couldn't he just have told her the truth? Why must he continue to conceal everything and selfishly guard his secrets, never allowing Ivy to penetrate the walls he's built around his heart? Knowing what she knows now, will she still be able to stay married to Cullen? Will she ever be able to trust him??? Does he even love her or is he only using her as he's used so many others??? And now she knows for sure that there have been others! Truths are told! Secrets are revealed! Lies are exposed! Commitments made! Promises sworn! Oh My! But has Cullen finally revealed everything??? Hmm.... I wonder??? No spoilers from me but I will say this..... Super sexy dominant boss who may have control issues who loves to discipline and punish his "student"-check! Handsome charismatic competitor and former friend who seeks revenge-check! Beautiful, shy virgin who discovers that she loves to submit-check! An overprotective and very meddlesome mother-check! A mysterious and elusive father who is wanted by the FBI-check! Office politics, drama, secrets, domination, consequences, punishment, blackmail, possible corporate espionage, a claimed FBI investigation and maybe even murder-check! A private jet, a sudden eventful trip to Vegas and a unexpected quickie wedding-check! Heated attraction, sexy seduction, fiery passion, mind-blowing suspense, a smidge of BDSM, steamy sex and an unhealthy dose of agonizing angst-you bet! Oh my God! That and a whole lot more! This story just gets better and better! The story is smart, exciting, fast-paced, suspenseful, compelling, arousing and seductive. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows effortlessly. Major Shortcomings

I purchased this book because I had never used Microsoft Outlook (had been using Lotus Notes for years at work). The book uses primarily examples to illustrate some of the features of Outlook, but does not deal with all of them. To this point, it took me several weeks until I finally figured out how to receive all my mail from my ISP in Outlook (click on "Tools", "send/receive", then "send/receive all"); this is such a key feature that it should be prominently explained/discussed in this book.
Furthermore this book is completely useless for troubleshooting problems with MS Outlook 2003, so you have to use the on-line Help function.
The index is not very comprehensive, so if you are starting your search there, yopu may not find what you are looking for
