The product came with everything needed for the course. CD and Temperature/Pressure Constant Tables (which is a large folded paper pamphlet at the back of the book which you need to solve certain problems in the course.)

Like other reviews here, one of the sections of the conversion tables is missing, in the hardcover version of the book the section that's missing is presented on the backside of the front section hardcover. Apparently it's not included in this version of the book (Paperback). Nevertheless it's something trivial as it's conversion tables that can be acquired through the internet with a simple google search or by taking photocopy of someone that owns the hardcover.

To be honest the best thing about this book is the price. For 27 dollars I get 99.9% of what you would get with the hardcover version which starts at a whopping 100+ dollars. A great value for your buck and a book that is fundamental for more than one course in your degree.

Absurdly, almost totally worthless MEB textbook..

First off, this book was required by my chemical engineering material and energy balances course. I initially bought the international edition since it was only like $15. However, each chapter continually left me with more questions than answers. As a result, I thoight it was information left out, since I bought the international edition. After purchasing the regular addition, they are literally Word for Word... Aside from a few questions at the end of each chapter. Come to find out, it's not the international edition, it is the book. This book is almost totally worthless. There are literally sections that have one or two sentences. This book does not go into detail on how to perform the MEB calculations, nor is it helpful in my MEB class. I do not know why any professor would choose to use this book? Especially since there are great in MEB text books available. There is no solution, or study guide material available to go along with this book. I literally had to take it upon myself to order A second, non-required, $150 book, to accompany, & to make up for all the slack left over from this one. Absurd!

For reference, The second book I purchased, which is extremely helpful-

If you have the option, and you are merely purchasing this book for additional or supplementary material balance info.. Pass on this book!!

Good reference book. Just be wary though, the paperback version has different numbers for the same problems in the hardcover book. Also, there's one less table (front cover conversions) in the paperback book from the hardcover.

Getting Social with your Photos

I tend to be a bit of a meathead around my smartphone. There are only a few apps I use on a regular basis -- mostly because I still think a phone should be a **phone**. Any of that other stuff is just needless extras. Pull up yer pants, ye whippersnappers.

I've been even worse with my cellphone camera. I barely ever used it on my other devices -- and the entire problem was that I'd gotten used to using film cameras growing up. Once digital photography drove film cameras into extinction, I mostly quit taking pictures altogether. But I've started taking pictures for my job, so it was time to get back on the horse -- and this book helped out a lot.

This book is going to be most helpful to you if you're fairly well-acquainted with photography to begin with. It's especially useful if you're fairly accustomed to digital photography already, but most of what's discussed will allow even neophytes to catch up to the rest of the class quickly. Even better, it's easy to pick up some simple tricks you never knew about, and several that you never even dreamed were possible with a smartphone camera. I may not be ready to try long exposures, time lapses, photo layering, or anything requiring serious photo-editing skills -- but there are a lot more techniques, most of them quite simple, that I've started experimenting with. And I'm already seeing an improvement in the photos I take.

Possibly the most useful chapter of this book is the one listing photographers worth following on social media. It's not really an opportunity to name-drop -- it gives aspiring photogs some people who it'd be good to keep track of, just to keep yourself inspired and challenged by what the experts are doing.

As is mentioned several times in the book, the best camera is the one you have with you -- and nowadays, almost everyone has a pretty good camera in their pocket, ready to snap a photo anytime.

The photos are winners, the techniques are wonderfully outlined, and the text and layout make the whole book a fast and fun read. Pick it up -- you'll be glad you did.

About the Author

Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.

Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French.

Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Robert H. Turner is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). He earned a B.S. and M.S. from the University of California at Berkeley, and his Ph.D. from UCLA, all in mechanical engineering. He worked in industry for 18 years, including nine years at Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Dr. Turner then joined the University of Nevada in 1983. His research interests include solar and renewable energy applications, thermal sciences, and energy conservation. He established and was the first director of the Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Nevada. For 20 years Dr. Turner has designed the solar components of many houses. In 1994–95, in a cooperative effort between UNR and Erciyes University in Kayseri, Turkey, he designed and oversaw construction of the fully instrumented Solar Research Laboratory at Erciyes University, featuring 130 square meters of site-integrated solar collectors. His interest in applications has led Dr. Turner to maintain an active consulting practice. Dr. Turner is a registered Professional Engineer and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Great for learning the FUNDAMENTALS.

I thought this was a very well written, organized book. The concepts were explained very clearly. It was great to finally find an understandable book on this subject; other thermo/fluids books that I have read haven't been as informative and comprehendable.
One of the drawbacks, however, was the fact that the examples presented within the book were very simple and didn't cover the concepts in as much depth as I had hoped. Many complex topics that were in the questions at the end of the chapter hadn't been covered well enough in the preceding text to allow them to be both solved AND understood. Furthermore, there were some thermo/fluid topics that weren't covered in the book at all that I thought should have been (compressible flow, for example). As a result, when I took the course in college, my professor had to print out pages from other thermo books to compensate for this.
Despite this, however, there were many pictures that accompanied the examples and again, as stated above, it was easy to understand. I was very impressed with that, given the abstractness of the subject, and the difficulty that other authors have had explaining it effectively.
The bottom line: It was a great book to learn about the fundamentals. I suppose, according to the title, it has served its purpose. However, if you want to go into depth with this subject, go elsewhere.

The mystery of Christ: Jenkins has the courage to confront us with historical truth and the result is fascinating

I have to admit I'm still only halfway through this book, and I've read other Jenkins's works because of his standing as a scholar, but this book is a revelation (if the author might pardon the pun). I have been telling people about it because it is so eye-opening and fascinating. He writes and explains with such ease as he merrily bursts bubbles of myth to reveal the depth and complexity of the development of Christian faith. None of the ridiculous mumbo-jumbo of Dan Brown; just the facts. And the facts are quite interesting enough. Can't wait to keep reading. He's not attempting to destroy the great mystery of Jesus Christ or orthodoxy, but calling us to consider we should still stand before that mystery, along with countless others before us and to come, with humility and a desire for the truth that the Great Teacher encouraged us to value because it liberates us. I am going to dare to say the best Jenkins work yet, of all the many.

The Many (False) Faces of Christ

The Many Faces of Christ by Phillip Jenkins is a complicated work. To review his book, a brief review of history is needed. In 325 AD the Emperor Constantine convened the council of Nicaea. While the council did not determine what was and was not authorized (canonical) scripture it did set the stage for the church to exercise authority in determining what was genuine scripture and what scriptures were flawed teaching, heretical, or simply bogus. Of course, not all purported scripture was deemed legitimate (canonical) gospel. Jenkins gives us the stories of those gospels that did not “make the cut.” How some gospels though not strictly canonical were in mainstream use, how others were used in Eastern European and elsewhere but not in Western Europe, and even how parts of the Qur’an have their genesis in non-canonical scripture.

There is no overarching theological point to Jenkins’ work. He just recounts how a certain non-canonical gospel was used during such and such time by such and such people while a different non-canonical gospel was favored, or at least in use, by a different group of believers at a different point in time. In recounting the use of these non-canonical gospels, Jenkins clearly doesn’t like the term “lost gospels” in that non-canonical (aka “lost”) gospels were often in still is use by large number of Christians. However, some gospels, like those discovered in modern times at Nag Hammadi, were truly “lost” to nearly all of Christianity.

Biblical scholars, like Jenkins, pride themselves on being objective, but this scientific objectivity, has it limits. Without a discussion of what is and what is not the inspired word of God (even if written by imperfect man) biblical scholarship is just another branch of history. It would seem reasonable to assert that any supposed gospel written after the Council of Nicaea (three centuries after Christ) would be considered a fraud. Also any purported gospel that deviates too far from established cannon should suspect at well.

Some biblical scholars might consider such canonical bias as the equivalent of religious intolerance. But consider this, let say someone supposedly discovered a “lost” Ian Fleming novel. But in this novel, James Bond is married, doesn’t drink and drives an economy car. We would be safe in saying that such a novel was a fraud. In the interest of scientific objectivity the same should be said of most, if not all, non-canonical gospels. The Many Faces of Christ would be a better book if it delved more into theological legitimacy, but even so it merits four stars.

Not bad, should include more for the price.

Decent book, but overpriced for what you're getting. The first three chapters are mostly learning exercises, although a few do produce useful items. The last chapter has several interesting projects, but unfortunately they only include three of the eight items in the cover photo.
