About the Author
Dr. Brad Long (DMin, Union Theological Seminary) is the Executive Director of Presbyterian Reformed Ministries International (PRMI). In 2000 he founded the Dunamis Fellowship International - a prayer community and seminary designed for equipping believers. Zeb has three children and lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Paul Keith Stokes (MA, Cambridge University) is a minister in the United Reformed Church in the UK serving two churches since 1992. Paul became involved with the PRMI Dunamis Project in November 2001, and served as track director in 2003. Two years later he was appointed as one of three national Directors for the newly-formed Dunamis Fellowship in Britain and Ireland. Paul has two children and lives in Plymouth Devon, England.

Cindy Strickler (MDiv, Princeton Theological Seminary) was ordained in 1986 by the Presbyterian Church in the United States as interim pastor of the Englishtown Presbyterian Church. In 1997 Cindy joined the Board of PRMI and served on the Executive Committee for three years and as President for one. Since 1994 she has been teaching Gateways to Empowered Ministry as well as the Dunamis Projects on Healing, Spiritual Gifts and Spiritual Warfare.

As I've spent a lot of time looking at books in this vien over the last few years, this one is unique in its approach to church growth.

Instead of programs and strategic planning type stuff, Growing the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit focuses on how to develop a godly leadership team that learns how to discern and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Programs and planning might be the RESULT of cooperating with the Holy Spirit, but that's beyond the scope of the book.

The focus is more on the spiritual development of the leadership to gain the skill of discerning what God might be calling the church to.

Looking at the story of Lazarus, the writers map out an image of the dance of cooperation.

As they look at that story, they unfold the 7 basic dynamics to cooperating with the Holy Spirit and what that might look like in terms of growing your church.

The authors draw from years of personal teaching experience around the world and practical experience in churches to build a beautiful image of cooperating with the Holy Spirit. The principles they outline have been field tested around the world, and several stories from different cultures back it up.

This is not a book of large church vs. small church, country vs. city, or any other type. Rather, this book is focused on helping you discover how to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

The authors fully believe that the Holy Spirit speaks and gives gifts at the right moment, and the book is full of illustrations of cooperating with the Holy Spirit and expressing those gifts.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit

Several years ago I had the opportunity to participate in a large gathering of Christian leaders from across the denominational spectrum. Roman Catholics, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Baptist, Methodist, Quaker, and non-Denominational.

The question on every leader's mind was "How do we discern the Spirit's leading?" In other words how do we as the Church, discern that the Spirit of the living God is leading His Church rather than denominational polity and endless programs. Have we lost the voice of the Holy Spirit in endless programs and Human Resource policies? As a pastor I worked for a large denomination in the United States. I cannot tell you the times, rather than seeking God in prayer and asking Him how we should respond in certain situations, we immediately contacted the HR department or the denominational handbook. The Church must move from man-centered church-growth techniques and wrestle with the hard fact that Jesus gave only one means of growing His Church. Jesus said, "I will grow my Church" and then later He told the disciples "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes." The growth of the Church is the Lord's and we are called to cooperate with Him. Now, I am by no means against good, godly and Christ-exalting programs whether they be for evangelism, leadership training and equipping, or discipleship but what good are these without the Presence of God in our midst?

The authors recognize the growing absence of the Presence of the Holy Spirit in much of how we make decision as Church. To this end they seek to fill this void by offering a substantial literary contribution in the area of Church growth and spiritual leadership. GROWING THE CHURCH IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT is a collaborative work which sees our cooperation with God as a "dance" where the Spirit leads rather than as a technique our best and brightest must develop, patent, package and sell. They offer seven principles to learn in order to become sensitive to a dynamic relationship with God Himself as He leads and we learn to follow. Step by step we CAN become sensitive to the leading of the Spirit of God and follow His desire For His Church.

I have read the book more than once and refer to it regularly. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Does it offer an exhaustive treatment of this timely and vital subject? The answer is "No," but of course no single volume can. It is, however, a valuable contribution which seek to answer the question we asked years ago at the conference. Just "How do we discern the Spirit's leading?" Within the pages of this book an answer unfolds. This volume aims to get the Church of Jesus Christ moving in the right direction. If you are a pastor, a leader in the church or concerned member, and if you struggle with the marketing, the endless denominational red-tape and programmed Christian life, then this book is for you.

Absolutely superb - Five Stars!

Exceeds expectations exponentially. The author is brilliant, at least in her analysis of Cormac McCarthy. I've read a dozen books concerning Cormac McCarthy's writing, and I've read each of McCarthy's books, some of them twice. After reading Lydia R. Cooper I went back and reread some of McCarthy's books again. She has the best, most closely reasoned analysis of McCarthy's books I've ever read. I was often surprised in reading her and was obliged to reevaluate many aspects of McCarthy's work. She deserves five stars, and she deserves to be read by anyone who takes McCarthy seriously. I believe that he is one of the top writers in the world today, and Lydia R. Cooper is certainly his best critic.

Functional Foods are being introduced into society at a particularly sensitive moment.

Diet-related diseases have assumed proper epidemic proportions significantly affecting the quality of life while obesity is spreading not only to the majority of the adult population but also, more worryingly, to young people who rarely have the option of alternative diets. As scientific proof for the link between diet and disease accumulation, there are increasingly louder calls for policy action.

At the same time, food has been high on the political agenda in recent years. As a result of food scandals such as BSE, dioxin and foot and mouth disease, and also partly due to public discontent arising from the introduction of genetically modified foodstuffs in the market, food has become a main issue in public debates and a focal point of political activity in Europe. Consumer trust in food production and the ability of authorities to protect them has been eroded, as there is widespread suspicion in public transparency and important information is lacking. Consequently, there are also calls for more coherence, transparency and accountability in food issues.

It is within this situation that Functional Foods have been developed. They assume a highly targeted solution to diet related diseases with effective reduction of risk and improved physical and mental well-being, but are still faced with a host of unresolved issues. This report reviews Functional Foods from a multidisciplinary perspective focusing on safety, legal/policy aspects, economy, public perceptions and ethics. It attempts to clarify the main issues and provides comprehensive recommendations for policymaking.

Mr. Suchard tells us right away that the way he reads minds is that he truly is psychic, and gives some incidents from his childhood to illustrate this ("I always knew what my mother was going to say...") The rest of the book recounts the highlights of some of his shows and talks about the importance of positive thinking. Buy this book if you've seen a show and want to re-live it. Don't buy it if you want to learn how to read people.

About the Author
Deborah Turbeville, a fashion editor turned photographer, was a fashion editor for Mademoiselle in 1966. A portfolio of some very stylized photographs she did for Saks Fifth Avenue was her first big breakthrough into the fashion photography world. Subsequently, her work first appeared in Vogue in the 1970s. Since then she has been a dominant figure in contemporary photography. Turbeville has authored many books, including Unseen Versailles, Wallflower, Studio St. Petersburg, Past Imperfect 1978-1997, and Casa No Name. Her work continues to be exhibited around the world and is published regularly in many international magazines.�

I am a big fan of Deborah Turbeville's work and this book was fabulous. I love the feel/mood of the images and I am happy to have this book as part of my photography library. I also have her "Past Imperfect" book too. I think this one is better, though I love them both. Found the book to be very inspirational. Lots of ideas for shooting I would like to do.
