About the Author
Rebecca Kay is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Central and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow, UK. Outstanding Translation and a Whole Lot MORE!!

As anyone can tell from my previous reviews, I don't pull punches or spare criticism when I encounter a TCM or Classical Chinese medical book that fails to deliver. Well, this delivers bigtime and I'm very pleased with it. The organization is didactic, the translations appear reasonable and, thank goodness, the full Hanzi, fully accented PinYin and the translation are close by and easily accessible.

It is obvious that meticulous scholarship went into the production of this book and it should prove to be the standard book on this topic for some time to come.

As an unexpected bonus, the reader is treated to an absolutely superb chapter towards the end of the book on the topic of a kind of introduction to the nuances of classical Chinese and the typical grammatical constructs and idioms characteristic of medical books of this era. It is one of the finest introductions I've seen on the topic and an unexpected treasure in a book filled with commentary, translations and explanations which make the work of the student a delight instead of an unending search through obscure dictionaries and readers.

As a graduate, not too long ago, of a medical college of Traditional Chinese medicine, I can say that this book will have a central spot on my medical bookshelf for some time to come!

Highly recommended and my profound thanks to the people involved in its production!

Difficult to sort through

For me, information in this book is organized in a way that makes its very difficult to differentiate the specificities between syndromes within each of the 6 stages. I think it is probably true that this book is an accurate translation of the Shang Han Lun, but what I was looking for was a source that would break down the Shang Han Lun into a simpler terms. Basically found Mitchell's book very difficult to sort through, and not helpful for studying.

"A Readers" review is factually incorrect and misleading

As the publisher of this book, there are several factual errors in the anonymous review posted here that I would like to address.

First, the "translation of a translation" comment is misleading. First century texts such as the Shang Han Lun are not books one pulls off a shelf. They were typically prepared on silk or bamboo, and their content is today known via a process called "collation" where archeological artifacts and references in later texts are studied to create a best possible idea of the orginal. The Shang Han Lun Yi Shi, on which this text is based, has been considered the standard by scholars for some time.

Secondly, the "translation of a translation" issue is germane only in texts that do not contain the source Chinese. Not only does this text contain the source Chinese, there are appendicies that contain a ground-breaking study of the Shang Han Lun terminology, and alternate orderings of the Chinese text. Importantly, the translators decisions are openly and transparently justified giving readers the opportunity and tools they need to decide questions for themselves. In the case of this translation, each passage in the text is accompanied, not only by the English translation, but by commentary on the terminology and translational decisions.

As regards the anonymous writer's contention that the commentaries are not by the author. This is simply false. Feng Ye, Md. Phd., is listed as an author; he is a professor at Chang Gung Medical College where he supervises and instructs graduate Chinese medicial doctors in a teaching hospital. Dr. Wiseman, the primary linguist, also teaches at Chang Gung Medical College and has widely published not only the term set but also the research on which this translation is based.

Everyone will make their own decision as to which Shang Han Lun best suits their needs, but that decision should not be informed by "a Reader's" factual errors.

About the Author
Robert Dueck received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and worked for several years as a design engineer at Motorola Canada in Toronto. He began teaching in 1986, specializing in digital and microcomputer subjects in the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs at Seneca College in Toronto. His first book, Fundamentals of Digital Electronics, was published in 1994, and he has written several additional textbooks. He now teaches digital electronics and related courses at Red River College in Winnipeg. Mr. Dueck is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He served as chair of the Winnipeg Section of IEEE in 2002 and was branch counselor of the Red River College Student Branch from 1997-2006.

This book rules!!!

This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen. I do not know of another digital book like it.
It also includes Altera's MAX Plus II software on CD in back of the book along with design files for use with the book prepared by the author.

Good for beginners

This is a good book for beginners to digital logic and VHDL. It spends a lot of time explaining how different components like encoders, decoders, muxes, state machines, etc work. That's good for people who haven't been exposed to the material before. If you want to learn that stuff and apply it in VHDL, it's a great book. If you're just trying to learn one or another aspect, there are probably better books out there. If you want to learn VHDL from the book and already know a fair amount about digital logic, it's tough because you keep on skipping stuff you already know and and then later find out that there was VHDL information buried in that section on seven-segment displays. Similarly, people just trying to learn digital logic who are uninterested in VHDL will probably find that they spend a lot of time skipping past explanation of VHDL. Add in the fact that lots of space is taken up by screenshots of Altera software, and the book ends up containing surprisingly little information for its size. People who want a thorough discussion of digital logic or VHDL should look elsewhere. Beginners will probably be right at home.

Great CPLD book with practical examples

The teaching of digital electronics using CPLD is very useful, the book covers theory, truth table, gate level implementation. The examples show you how to create a module, for instance,a multiplexer.It doesnt only end here, it further demonstrate the application of the multiplexer. From there, you can have better understanding from gate level up to system level. I benefit a lot from this approach. The examples are very useful despite I am not writing in VHDL.

The book also explain the internal architecture of CPLD, starting from the history development of programmable logic devices. If you want to learn on CPLD, this is definitely the book for you, even if you are not using VHDL.

Degroff (The Craft of the Cocktail) likes to be referred to as the King of Cocktails, and it is hard to argue the point. Just starting out on the mixology journey

I decided it was time to start finding some more things I'd like to drink other than the 3 things I order at every bar. So I checked a bunch of books on bar tending out of the library. This is by far my favorite so I bought a copy to keep. First, it has a lot of the classic drinks that you'd get at a bar and also lots of others and all the drinks I've made so far are really great. Second, the photos are super - I pick half the drinks just by their looks alone. Third, the stories with each drink just add another layer of fun. I didn't expect to learn anything about the history of cocktails in America, but I have and it's been really fun.

Superb

Superb book.

No really, this may very well be the book I have enjoyed the most, ever (though principally these kind of judgements are bollocks and nothing more, of course).

If you have the slightest acquaintance with psychoanalysis (the Lacanian field, preferably), the book should be read with Zizek's "The Fright of Real Tears". Here Zizek has some really perceptive discussions on Kieslowski the filmmaker and on charachters in the Colour Trilogy - without too many forced obscene jokes, I might add.

Excellent book, excellent condition

It's been wonderful having the opportunity to better know one of the best filmmakers in my opinion.
The book does not just focus only on the director Kieslowski, but also in the person Kieslowski.
As a big fan of Kieslowski's film, I say that this book is indispensable for all who admire his work.
