The dominant response, however, has been a slide toward irrationalism. If people are ignoring the consequences of their actions, it is claimed, it must be because they are making some sort of a mistake.

In Following the Rules, Joseph Heath attempts to reverse this trend, by showing how rule-following can be understood as an essential element of rational action. The first step involves showing how rational choice theory can be modified to incorporate deontic constraint as a feature of rational deliberation. The second involves disarming the suspicion that there is something mysterious or irrational about the psychological states underlying rule-following. According to Heath, human rationality is a by-product of the so-called "language upgrade" that we receive as a consequence of the development of specific social practices. As a result, certain constitutive features of our social environment-such as the rule-governed structure of social life-migrate inwards, and become constitutive features of our psychological faculties. This in turn explains why there is an indissoluble bond between practical rationality and deontic constraint.

In the end, what Heath offers is a naturalistic, evolutionary argument in favor of the traditional Kantian view that there is an internal connection between being a rational agent and feeling the force of one's moral obligations.

Such a shame that this will be read by almost no one..

I generally can't be bothered enough to write reviews and I'm sure, Mr. Heath doesn't need this kind of external validation to feel confident in the merits of his work; it just bugs me to no end that a gem like this is bound to remain in obscuration, read only by those who don't really matter..

From the layman on philosophy matters that I am, this title naturally required more attention and looking up of terminology and references than the popsci category of things, I've gone through in the past, but boy, it sure was that much worthier!

One of the main payoffs for me was that, even though the primary objective of the book is to articulate a convincing argument for the existence and persistence of the uniquely human normative tendencies, along the way of doing so, it brought a tremendous amount of food for thought (and expanded FOV) on such diverse topics as psychology, economics, social justice, nature of consciousness and AI development challenges.

As the review theme suggests, the one unfortunate side-effect, reading this book has is to make starker the contrast between this kind of discourse, brilliant elucidation and cut-through long standing philosophical arguments, and the common denominator public sphere conversation we're gradually forced to accept as normal. Still; easily the most satisfying and (I suspect) important non-fiction work I've read in a while.

Save your money....this book is not what you think.

Really, don't waste your money. Don't even waste your time reading this in the library. The information is not the great and is more often than not, out of date. This book was a real disappointment, and I'm glad that I only paid a penny for it (plus shipping). Let's just say that this compendium of useless information went right into the recycling bin!

About the Author

Rena Cook is Head of Voice at the School of Drama, University of Oklahoma and was a high school drama teacher for 16 years. Rena presents voice workshops
for state drama conferences in Colorado, Texas, and Georgia, as well as the Educational Theatre Associations' Conference. A professional voice and dialect coach, Rena served as Editor-in-Chief of the Voice and Speech Review.

Invaluable!

Rena Cook's voice workbook is a must have in any High School performance curriculum, whether it be theatre, speech or a musical theatre course, this book is invaluable. As an individual one could greatly benefit from this book; as a teacher it is invaluable. I know of no other resource as comprehensive as this to train young people to use their instrument effectively! The book is perfectly laid out, user friendly and is completely solid in method and approach! Discussion questions assist in providing for extension of activities and reflection opportunity encourages meta-cognition during the process of training one's voice; this is not just filled with great technique but also awesome pedagogy! Teacher tips are abundant and incredible. Ms. Cook's experience as a master teacher are evident and she is generous in sharing not only her voice expertise, but also her pedagogical prowess with the reader. I cannot recommend this book and the accompanying included DVD highly enough. Every High School and Junior High Theatre & Speech class would benefit by incorporating this valuable and important guide to safe and effective use of the voice directly into the curriculum. A Must Have!

High-school drama students will love this!

This hugely entertaining, yet profoundly informative book by Rena Cook is destined to be a hit with the high-school drama student. In thirteen chapters, with come-hither titles like, "I hate my voice," "Why am I so tense?", and "No, I don't have marbles in my mouth," Cook's important addition to the literature is very welcome. Before becoming an internationally-known figure in the voice and speech world, Cook was, for sixteen years, a high-school drama teacher herself, so knows of which she speaks! Without a trace of condescension, Cook includes fictional blogs from students wrestling with the vocal demands of the theatre they have so recently encountered, and she speaks directly to those concerns. The book explains the nuts and bolts of phonation, articulation, breathing, etc, in a very easy-to-follow and sensible way, again without an excess of redundant anatomical detail but without dumbing down what the actor needs to know. She provides frequent and succinct summaries of her teaching, enjoyable and relevant exercises, and invites the user to make a journal-cum-blog of this excellent work book. Fully indexed, with a generous reading list, and wonderful photographs of "just-like-me" high-school actors at work on stage, this book will readily find a warm welcome among its intended readership. Helpful DVD Bonus

Very useful book for young/beginning acting students. Also a great resource for renewing an instructor's interest in teaching voice work--reassurance seeing exercises one knows, rejuvenation finding new activities to learn and teach. The accompanying DVD is a useful bonus since many voice/acting exercises are hard to describe in words and even illustrations.

About the Author
Samuel DeWitt Proctor, Th.D. is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University and the Pastor Emeritus of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He earned a doctorate in theology at Boston University, became president of two colleges -- Virginia Union, his Alma Mater and North Carolina A&T -- and served as associate director of the Peace Corps under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He was also a speechwriter for Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign of 1968, was Associate General Secretary of the National Council of Churches, and headed up the Institute for Services to Education. Ultimately he served as Lyman Beecher Lecturer at Yale in 1990, professor at Vanderbilt University, United Theological Seminary, and Duke University. He lives in New Jersey.

Dr. Proctor is a must read. Have you ever played a trumpet? If not a trumpet played correctly is a beautiful sound as the results. Just the same when crafting sermons. If done correctly what a beautiful sound to those who hear the results. Thanks Dr. Proctor.
