In an important, gracefully written exploration of the neurochemical basis of mind, neurologist Damasio rejects the Cartesian notion of the human mind as a thinking organ more or less separate from bodily processes. Emotions and feelings, he argues, are essential to reasoning and decision-making. The human brain, he further contends, has a specialized region in the frontal lobes for making personal and social decisions, and this region works in concert with deeper brain centers that store emotional memories. To support this controversial claim, Damasio draws on his work with brain-injured patients at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and also cites the case of Phineas Gage, a Vermont railway foreman who lost his ethical faculties after an explosion in 1848 drove a metal rod through his skull. Damasio, head of neurology at the University of Iowa and a prominent researcher on human brain function, challenges this premise in a fascinating and well-reasoned argument on the central role that emotion and feelings play in human rationality. According to Damasio, the same brain structures regulate both human biology and behavior and are indispensable to normal cognitive processes. Damasio demonstrates how patients (his own as well as the 19th-century railroad worker Nicholas Gage) with prefrontal cortical damage can no longer generate the emotions necessary for effective decision-making. A look at Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain

After reading Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain, I wanted to give an overview of the book, and insight on how to go about reading it. First off, I would suggest this book to anyone who thinks that they are a logical thinker and decision maker that does not let emotion interfere with their decisions. Damasio uses case studies prolifically to support his hypotheses that the mind and body cannot be separated and are in fact an integrated unit.

If you are interested in reading about topics dealing with the mind, and this is the first book that you are choosing to read it will more than likely be a challenging one. Damasio uses numerous of anatomical names for structures and disease names within his book. If you are not familiar with the brain you will be constantly going to Wikipedia or Google to figure out what exactly he is talking about. I would highly suggest starting off with a different book that simply goes over the brain in general before tackling this one. While Descartes' Error can be informative it is much more enlightening and enjoyable if you already know the jargon. That way you will not have to stop reading every other paragraph to go online and look up terms.

The book itself is divided up into three parts. The first part looks into older case studies where people suffered brain injuries and after "recovery" had a change in both their personality and decision making ability. The most notable one is of Phineas Gage who had an iron rod go through his head and damage his frontal cortex. From this injury he had the symptoms listed above for the rest of his life. The second part of the book looks into explanations for why injuries such as the ones listed in the first part effect both decision making and personality. The final part of the book delves into ways to test these explanations and Damasio ends the book by giving an explicit explanation as to what he believes Descartes' Error was in regards to the books topic of the mind and body. For those who do not know who Descartes you will probably know a very famous quote by him, "I think therefore I am". He was a famous philosopher and mathematician from France. It would be beneficial to read the Wikipedia page on him before starting this book as well.

As I have stated before this book can be very dense and labor intensive to read if you have never taken a neuroscience course or read any books on the brain before. Some sections will have to be read over a few times for the information to sink in and really make sense. Damasio includes asides throughout the book on various topics and ideas that he mentions in the main text. These blurbs while helpful are generally where you are going to feel the most confused. The topics that he discusses in these asides, like Phrenology, have whole books written on them, and Damasio only has a few paragraphs on the topic. He tries to get as much information in as possible, and you can feel like your in over your head because the it is just that dense.

All in all for books on the brain I would say that this is a must read. Damasio presents plausible hypotheses and does a good job supporting them. The thing that I like most is both at the beginning and end of the book he makes sure to mention that what he has stated are just hypotheses and that they are not facts. They are conjectures. The field of neurobiology does not have all the answers, so while his hypotheses seem to fit they are not the end all and be all.

Beautifully written for the layperson without dumbing down the message

Everyone should read this book. What Damasio has to tell us about the role of emotion in our reasoning process is fascinating and profoundly important, especially in our culture that wrongly teaches us that the two are separate and that engaging emotions in the reasoning process is a fault of logic. Beautifully written for the layperson without dumbing down the message.

A book that deserves to be like a (king) among other books, though i rated it four and not five.

This is a very valuable book, which i read last year from the library and i decided recently to buy and keep, it is a very important book. The problem was that what I got was not the same and that was my fault. The one from the library was
big , thick and hard cover. It didn't matter cause the same subjects.I am not in a position to debate or question any of the subjects in the book. I don'tg have that education for and iwas happy to learn a lot. The reason i decided to keep a book like that at home, because i went through things in life and with meditation and some focusing about my life
and the life of others, i came up in 1986 with a belief that what i knew about Descart, in school and and when i was young , was not a correct sentence, to say the least. I did not have that kind of education to argue a man like him but my walk with God had taught me alot and i knew he was wrong, and i waited a long time to find a way to prove it.
W hen i saw that book (Descart's Error) in a bookstore, i was surprised and decided to read it . It is , no doubt , a book that should be kept at home and the four , not five stars is not because the book is not valuable enough
but because, in my opinion , though a scientist thinks , speaks and writes as a scientist , a true scientist , should leave a space, even one percent, to a potential reality that may still exist within the circle of impossibility. I am sorry for this lengthy opinion but the issue of( I think , therefore I am ) became the backbone of my own study and research and the book with all due respect to the author never discussed the phrase itself. I......Think........Therefore......I am. What is "I", what is thinking, what is Am, and where did Therefore come from and to be pushed in the middle.If you cannot tell me what "I" is ,what think is , what am is, then how can you tell me Therefore I am???! That is why four stars instead of five and thank you for reading this long (opinion!!!!).

About the Author

Emmy Abdul Alim is Editor for Thomson Reuters' Islamic Finance Gateway. Away from Thomson Reuters, she has been writing independently about Islamic finance since 2010. She has an MBA, Finance, from the University of Aberdeen; a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Islamic studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and a BA in English and European studies from the National University of Singapore. Solid introduction and reference

The ISBN 1118465245 (Global Leaders in Islamic Finance, 1st ed.) is well published, without difficult technical aspects, and a decent introduction to mysterious Islamic finances. They also have their own bad apple, namely the 2014 execution of Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death by the Iranian court for $2.6 billion state bank fraud - the largest since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It is grammatically well written, illustrated in black and white with several figures pretending to show something meaningful, and easy to understand by non-professionals despite its apparent technicality. The book is up to date and applicable especially for studying dictatorial practices and corruption. It provides an easy access to the subject and thus it belongs in every public library also as a simple reference work. Approx. 103 pages incl. the index are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on good paper, and hard-bound incl. a nice dust jacket. The covers are strong and flexibly jointed.

Interesting Survey of Recent (past 40 years) People in Islamic Finance

First of all, this book does not really describe in detail the actual workings of Islamic finance. Instead, it delves into exactly what the title suggests: "Global Leaders in Islamic Finance........" Not really difficult, but certainly filled with interesting characters, and their own visions and actions about the subject since around 1970. If you really want to know how it affects the world markets, and the persons behind it, this is a great book. Perhaps, the non-technical aspect of the book is also a great positive since it keeps the book a good read, interesting, and not too complex for the ordinary person just interested in the subject!

Bios of leaders in Islamic finance; some background knowledge recommended

I read this book because it looked interesting.

The book is chapter long biographies of Islamic financial leaders. Generally, these are people who are still alive and who have had major roles in banking and shaping the way the finance system is structured now in the Islamic world. The book also goes into historyof financial institutions and banks, and the human connections between these institutions.

I have woefully little background knowledge in politics, history, geography, or finance. Because of that, much of this book was just me seeing the setting. For example, if a biography subject lived through a major political event, then that got mentioned, and I learned that that thing happened. So, for me, the book was all setting.

Overall, this is a well researched and readable book. If you have a reason to want to bone up on the topic, or if you want a biography of a key figure or history of a bank or financial institution in the field, then this is worth checking.

My most-used reference for power systems analysis

I've been involved in distribution system analysis for over 15 years and I've found this book to be the best one I've seen on the subject.

The chapters on line impedance calculations are thorough and give you all the information you need to actually do all the calculations you would want. I've found most other textbooks just give a cursory overview of this subject matter.

Likewise the chapters on transformer modeling go right into detail on how to model different transformer connections.

Since I got the 1st edition a number of years ago I've become a fan of the approach it takes to analysis, such as using full matrices impedances and using real units throughout the calculations instead of the usual per unit type approach. There's really no reason to make these simplifications any more these days.

If you're ever interested in actually implementing distribution analysis, I would consider this book indispensable.

About the Author

Holger Brunn

Holger Brunn has been a fervent open source advocate since he came in to contact with the open source market sometime in the nineties. With an academic background in philosophy and sociology, he turned his interest to generalized logic, which proves helpful in many aspects of his IT work. Turning into a professional programmer was a side effect of his hobbyist interest, combined with a part-time job with a very open-minded mentor to whom he owes a lot of gratitude. He has programmed for ERP and similar systems in different positions since 2001. For the last eight years, he has dedicated his time to TinyERP, which became OpenERP and evolved into Odoo. Currently, he works at Therp BV in the Netherlands as a developer and is an active member of the Odoo Community Association (OCA). He's most interested in fundamental work on technical modules, but also enjoys contributing to other projects, with a focus on UI and website widgets, CRM, and knowledge management.

Alexandre Fayolle

Alexandre Fayolle started working with Linux and free software in the mid 1990s and quickly became interested in the Python programming language. Between 1999 and 2012, he helped manage Logilab, a company he cofounded, he specialized in Python development, and had the opportunity to work on projects for large companies such as EDF, Arcelor-Mittal, and GdF Suez (now Engie) using the Cubicweb framework. He also tackled fun projects involving machine learning, natural language processing, and multi-agent systems. In 2012, he joined Camptocamp to share his expertise on Python, PostgreSQL, and Linux with the team implementing Odoo (OpenERP at the time). He currently manages projects for Camptocamp and is strongly involved in the Odoo Community Association. In his spare time, he likes to play the vibraphone in a jazz quartet, but has recently been known for writing a book about Odoo, which he hopes you'll enjoy.

Daniel Reis

Daniel Reis has been working in the IT industry for over 15 years in developer, consultant, and management roles. Most of this work was at the Capgemini multinational consultancy firm, implementing proprietary business solutions for reference companies in a variety of sectors, such as industry, telecommunications, and banking. Daniel has a BSc in applied mathematics and a master's in business administration from the ISCTE Business School. He's worked with Odoo solutions (formerly OpenERP) since 2010, and he is an active contributor in the Odoo community association projects. He has been a speaker at the Open Days annual conference and other open source events. He is the author of the first Odoo development book: Odoo Development Essentials, also by Packt Publishing. He currently works at Securitas, the global security services company, where he has introduced Python, Odoo, and other open source solutions into the company's IT applications portfolio.

Appropriate for many levels, organized, and clear

I always want to know know who is writing the computer software book review, so I'll start there. I'm pretty comfortable in Linux. I'm not really a developer or DevOp. I have a lot of manufacturing and ERP experience. Let's get into the book review.

The book is written for Odoo v9. v10 comes out ~October 2016. Most info will still apply. v8 was a bit different, and v7 was wholly different. This book should work for quite a while.

What it won't do:
This won't teach you Linux, Python, or XML syntax, but it shouldn't. You should have a reasonable understanding of git (like GitHub). You should have already played with Odoo a bit to learn how it comes together. You should also know about your business processes.

What it will do:

Teach you by doing first, explaining second. Chapters are organized with the _how it works_ following the procedural _recipe_. This works well because you're curious to see how a certain bit you just typed works. Brunn et.al. have done well referring to related recipes, including those you haven't seen yet.

You'll learn, by example, how to set up a new Odoo instance. The authors give good tips for building a maintanable infrastructure to run your Odoo project.

You'll learn how to create and extend Odoo modules. After building out some basic functionality, the authors explain more broad concepts. Don't expect your pace through the book to be linear. The first few chapters may take 1-2 days. Mastering later chapters could take months or more. In this way, Cookbook is instructional and a reference.

If you're building out an Odoo instance, or if you develop Odoo modules professionally, this is definitely worth the small price.

A wonderful inner journey

I read and worked through this book several years ago and found it very helpful for getting in touch with that person hidden deep inside. This book will help you clarify what the real you wants and needs and will also be helpful when you are making life decisions on which direction to go.
After a few years I've just picked this book off the shelf again. This is another way this book is so great, if you wait a while and work back through it, you'll be able to see how you have changed and find your new directions in life.

I do not believe it is necessary for a book to use 'big words' or long strung out descriptions in order for it to be helpful. Sometimes the simplest things are the best things. If you use this book with an open mind it will help you look inside yourself in ways so simple you would not have thought of them. I've read several self help and journaling books and this one is the best.

A book to return to again and again

I tried some of the exercises in this book years ago and found them really insightful. The art parts I skipped and focused on the writing exercises. Now I'm giving it another go and again it makes me think outside my usual box.

Some exercises use lists, some use word association, visualizing and a variety of techniques.

One exercise has you make a list of things you like about yourself. Then make a second list of things you would like to expand or strengthen. Then take one of the items and write out how you will actually do that in the coming week.

This is a good book to provide ways to explore some inner feelings and open up your thinking.
