Understanding care delivery financing - strategic imerative for all health professionals.

This is an important piece of work on one of the major issues driving health care delivery today - the cost of health care and the responding changes in how health care delivery is financed. Dr. Rambur has written an excellent review of how today's health care delivery is being financed, the major policy discussions around that financing, and the systems of financing that will drive policy decisions into the future. The major concern about this book is that it is titled as a work for nurses. In fact, this is a book that all health professional students should use to help them understand how the care they deliver will be financed and how it will shape the expectations for their accountability in providing that care. Well done.

An Accessible, Complex Book on National Digital Security

There are a number of books available on the subjects of cyberwarfare, cybercrime, and state-sponsored espionage. The majority of these books tend to address only one of these subjects. The best of them provide nuanced, in-depth treatments of their subjects, but demand a specialized, pre-existent body-of-knowledge in order to be fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the worst of these books are often those aimed at a general audience, where an intelligent discussion of the real issues at hand is often exchanged for anxiety and hyperbole.

Joel Brenner's _America the Vulnerable: Inside the New Threat Matrix of Digital Espionage, Crime, and Warfare_ is a brilliant exception to both of these categories. Mr. Brenner may be uniquely-positioned to write this work-- he is trained as both a lawyer and an economist, and he has served as the United States' National Counterintelligence Executive and as Senior Counsel at the National Security Agency. He has first-hand exposure to the problems posed by cyberwarfare, cybercrime, and cyber-espionage, and possesses both the intellect and analytic toolsets with which to approach these problems.

Mr. Brenner begins by outlining the different problem-spaces-- cybercrime, the electronic theft of intellectual property, threats to weapons systems from compromised components, threats to the national powergrid-- by drawing on individual cases and events, and weaving them into a comprehensive narrative. Mr. Brenner painstakingly backs up his observations with almost 500 footnotes. (As a practitioner working in this space, I am familiar with the majority of what Mr. Brenner discusses in _America the Vulnerable_, and I still came away with much excellent supplementary reading material courtesy of the well-sourced research.) He continues with an excellent predictive scenario-- "June 2017"-- which synthesizes all of the previous work and makes explicit the cumulative threat.

Next, Mr. Brenner undertakes a discussion of how the gathering of intelligence and the protection of secrets has been fundamentally altered by information's transitus into searchable, indexed digital media. He concludes with a chapter entitled "Managing the Mess", where he lays out a number of responses to the current problems, encompassing shifts in public policy, as well as practical operational responses to business in a world rich in emergent, disruptive technologies.

Mr. Brenner's ability to make technical attacks and weaknesses clear to less-technical readers is impressive. No prior background in information technology is necessary to read and understand this book; however, Mr. Brenner has been meticulous in his explanations of complex technologies, and information security professionals will clearly recognize the issues under discussion. Personally, this book will greatly benefit me when I have to articulate certain risks to my executive management team.

By its very nature, this book must be a survey-- Joel Brenner cannot completely plumb all the subjects he is addressing in a 320 page book, and some specialists may yearn for more in-depth discussion on areas of particular interest to them. That being said, I think Mr. Brenner has achieved something powerful here-- he is articulating technical, economic, and legal problems to non-specialists while retaining a maximum of complexity and nuance. And, he has some logical, *actionable* responses to the problem-space. Bravo!

Scary, but a "must read"

"I had no idea" pretty much sums up my reaction to the first part of this book, which describes our rather shocking national and business vulverability to "bad guys" and "bad countries" in the digital age. Certainly, it is a wake up call to the dark side of the productivity, social and communications benefits of our digital age.

Perhaps what I appreciate most, however, is that the book does not stop there -- it continues to outline public policy and business responses that might be feasible and that we should all certainly consider. In short, this is more than a mere litany of complaints/concerns and also a thoughtful start toward "doing something constructive" about the serious issues raised.

Remarkably well written despite the serousness of the subject.

Strongly recommend that everyone should read.

Enhancements to the 4th edition: all chapters have been comprehensively updated to include recent events, issues, and policy debates including the conduct of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the use of private contractors for military support and operations, the rising cost of gasoline and disputes over energy policy and climate change, the controversy over immigration policy, requirements for financial regulation, heightened concerns over economic and social inequality, and the clash over reforming taxes and entitlement programs, as well as dealing with the federal deficit and national debt; new and updated "working with sources" and "steps to analysis" features that help students to investigate sources of information and apply evaluative criteria; and, new and updated end-of chapter discussion questions, suggested readings, and web sites.

Michael E. Kraft is professor emeritus of political science and public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He is the author of, among other works, Environmental Policy and Politics, 6th ed. (2015) and coauthor of Coming Clean: Information Disclosure and Environmental Performance (2011), with Mark Stephan and Troy D. Abel. In addition, he is the coeditor of Environmental Policy: New Directions in the 21st Century, 9th ed. (2016), with Norman J. Vig; Toward Sustainable Communities: Transition and Transformations in Environmental Policy, 2nd ed. (2009), with Daniel A. Mazmanian; and Business and Environmental Policy: Corporate Interests in the American Political System (2007) and The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Environmental Policy (2013), with Sheldon Kamieniecki. He has long taught courses in environmental policy and politics, American government, Congress, and public policy analysis. Scott R. Furlong is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of political science and public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. His areas of expertise are regulatory policy and interest group participation in the executive branch, and he has taught public policy for over twenty years. He is the author or coauthor of numerous book chapters and coauthor of Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Laws and Make Policy, 4th ed. (2011), with Cornelius M. Kerwin. A good textbook--but not without questions

This is a fine textbook in public policy--largely because of its coverage of substantive policy areas. It is also hideously overpriced. As a college instructor, I am often stunned by what publishers do to their customers. There are many other texts that are equivalent but much less expensive. As a result, I would never adopt this text.

Nonetheless, it is a fine volume. Part I considers the study of public policy. Three chapters are included: (1) a chapter on policy and politics; (2) another on relevant government institutions and policy actors; (3) chapter that focuses on understanding public policymaking (e.g., theories of policy, stages of the policy process, tools of policy).

Part II looks at analyzing public policy. Three chapters also comprise this part: (1) an introduction to policy analysis; (2) problems and policy alternatives to address these; (3) assessing alternatives (including cost-benefit analysis).

Finally, Part III. Here, we learn about various substantive policy fields. Included here: Economic and budgetary policy; Health Care Policy; Welfare and social security policy; Education policy; Environmental and energy policy; Foreign policy and homeland security. Each gives a sense of the issues associated with each policy arena.

The last chapter concludes with a general evaluation of larger issues, such as citizen participation in public policy, policy and its impacts, and so on.

The cost is way too high. The first two sections provide an introduction to the subjects, but (in my mind) do not provide enough detail for the reader to get a good idea of the issues at stake.

Still and all, a good textbook with some drawbacks. . . .

Dry as dust

Hands down the driest textbook it has ever been my misfortune to be assigned. Every week it's a struggle to force myself through the assigned chapter. The tone is relentlessly banal.

Worse, it recycles tired and damaging stereotypes that can only serve to reinforce, rather than challenge, people's views.

Surprisingly practical to explain the differences between alternatives

I recommended this book to a friend who works in transportation planning and has to assist decisionmakers (her boss) in evaluating policy decisions. Making policy decisions is more than a gut feeling. This book provides you tools to approach problems, find alternatives, analyze the alternatives, and decide between them. Really helps you articulate the differences between alternatives. It is hard to imagine a decision that these tools wouldn't be helpful to evaluate.
Many people need to show accountability for the choices they make, and this book explains how to do that as a part of a repeatable process.

Uh, is this a real book?

Alright, this book is not really what I was expecting. I guess i was expecting real information? A well written book? Something worth $20? Here are few things you should know if you're thinking about purchasing it:

- It's about 100 pages with enormous sized doubled-spaced font. It's practically a pamphlet.
- Taylor doesn't seem to know the different between "your" (possessive) and "you're" (you are).
- The guy can't write. At all. I'm guessing he hasn't yet completed the eighth grade. Obviously this book wasn't edited.
- He mentions several times what the book is about in the first few pages, "all about using social media", "all about building the groundwork for a successful wedding photography business", and "how I skipped the second shooter/assistance role". So...which one is it really "all about"?
- Its completely unorganized.
- All of the info in this book can be found online.
- Oh you want to know what info this book has? Stuff like: have a blog, Facebook, & Twitter, back up your photos, and "you'll have to work on Saturdays".
- I'm pretty sure all the reviews of this book were written by the author and/or his friends. There's no way possible a real customer gave this book 5 stars, let alone six customers.

The book is a joke and complete waste of money. I should have just vomited on a twenty dollar bill instead of buying it.

The Best Wedding Photog workshop in one small book

Ok so I am fairly new to the wedding photography industry. I try to second shoot every now and then. I still have some of the fears of "what if i miss this shot" or things of that nature. After reading Taylor's book, i no longer have these. He pretty much gave me the confidence and tips i needed in about 110 pages. It is clear that he poured much time and thought into this book as he goes into detail on all of the main issues wedding photos encounter on a daily basis. I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and I will continue to recommend it to all the wedding photos i know: old & new. Thanks for all the helpful hints and tricks Taylor! The book is great!

The info in the book is straight forward. What the author did.
Taylor explains his start in the business with suggestion for the reader to follow.
The main stay however is you got to do the leg work.
No rocket science in his methods, but they are laid out straight to the point.
Will this book make you a success? No
Will the methods work? Yes, but its gonna involve you doin some hard work

Not a master piece of literature, but a decent read and Taylor is a friendly helpful guy as well.
