What is a super food?

Super food is a term often exploited by food manufacturers to make products seem more nutritious than they actually are. Sometimes these products lack the scientific evidence to support their alleged health benefits and are no more than fads. This is a shame. Marketing hype aside, there is hard scientific research to show that some foods contain exceptional levels of nutrients that promote good health and protect the human body against disease. These are the super foods I have focused on in this book.

Finding a standard measure of what constitutes a super food is, however, complicated. A number of rating systems have been developed around the world that rank foods according to their nutrient density—the measure of nutrients per calorie. The problem is that these systems are not consistent. For example, some use different sets of essential nutrients as the basis for the rating. What’s more, nutrient density is not the only important factor. For example, there are thousands of phytochemicals that appear to have the potential to protect against a range of diseases, but these are not included in nutrient density measures because they have not been established as essential for bodily function.

After researching various rating systems, I have devised my own list of powerhouse foods (see pages 10 to 16) that contain exceptionally high levels of vitamins, phytochemicals, and other nutrients that are strongly associated with good health and reduced risk of chronic disease. The super foods that appear on this list are set in boldface in each recipe’s ingredients list so that they can be identified easily. Some ingredients found in the recipes—such as nut milks, wakame, tahini, and miso—are also set in boldface because they are forms
of super foods.

The list is by no means exhaustive, but provides a cross-section of super foods
in different food groups to help you load your diet with as much goodness
as possible.

A bit misleading, but still good
By Rae Quigley
I received a free copy of this book from Blogging For Books. All opinions expressed are my own, and not at all influenced by Blogging For Books or the publisher.

I got this book for my friend, who is very much into eating healthy and juicing. I, however, couldn't care less, so this review is based entirely off of observing her. There were a lot of "oohs and aahs" while looking at the picture. Which, is more than fair, because the photography used is stunning. What we both liked was that there were several different types of recipes - entrees, appetizers, and even desserts - which is useful.

She did say that it was a bit misleading because the cover says "65 recipes for optimal health" when the actual ingredients aren't always that healthy. They do use superfoods in each recipe, but she noticed a lot of "use heavy cream" or "use sticks of butter". If it were actually for optimal health, it would give alternatives to use like almond milk, as an example.

Overall she's really pleased, though, and looking to use some of the recipes soon.

The new year is the perfect time to jump start a healthier eating plan, and this book is the book to do it.
By Lisa at Fresh Eggs Daily
The new year is a perfect time to jump start a healthier eating plan. This book helps with that. Simple menu plans and ingredients incorporating some of the healthiest foods. The photographs are great, and make even the most basic recipes seem appetizing. The compact size makes it perfect to tuck in a corner of the kitchen counter or even tuck into your purse to bring along to the grocery store. Every recipe has a photo, which I love. And also lists the benefits of the ingredients.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher for review, but my opinions are my own and in no way influenced by the he free book.

By Amazon Customer
"Super Foods Every Day" by Sue Quinn is a comprehensive look into the different types of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that make up the category of Super Foods! The first chapter breaks it down into the benefits of each food. The author explains which vitamins and minerals the food stores and the many different benefits of each.

Readers learn all about antioxidants, lycopenes, phytochemicals, glucosinolates, carotenoids, flavonoids, folate, free radicals, and the many different vitamins! The author goes on to explain the benefits of each category and which foods help protect against cancer, heart disease, diabetes and which fruits and vegetables are anti-inflammatory or natural antioxidants.

The second half of this book is a series of recipes which includes Breakfast, Salads and Soups, Side Dishes, Main Dishes, Baked Goods and Sweet Things. Each recipe is simple yet energizing and all of the ingredients are pure, natural foods!

I loved this book for so many different reasons! I think God gave us all these wonderful foods for a reason, and that they are vital for our nutrition. I can't wait to try out these recipes! I rate this book as 5 stars.

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.
