The Jaguar King (The Wild Rites Saga - Book 1), by Anna McIlwraith

Magic is real? Big deal. Bills still gotta be paid.

Especially when you’re heading into vet med. Emma Chase is nothing special – if anything, with a roomie who turns into a jaguar on a regular basis, she’s the sidekick, not the heroine. Her superpowers have more to do with acing her finals and overworking herself. Knowing her best friend’s secret makes it easier to justify her own inclination to keep people at a distance, but it doesn’t change her life.

Until others like him show up on her doorstep, convinced she’s the fated savior of their race, telling her she’s destined to command the magic of – well, Emma doesn’t quite catch that part, she’s too busy getting her ass the hell out of there.

What she does know? The Jaguar King is after her, his rivals want her dead, and she doesn’t have to believe in prophecy to believe they’ll stop at nothing to catch her.

Violence. Magic. Inappropriate humor. Step into a world of wonder and savagery in a gritty urban fantasy with an unlikely heroine, sizzling heroes, and complicated villains. The Jaguar King is a full-length read and the first in a series, and all the books have satisfying resolutions as well as a series-spanning story arc. Definitely no cliff-hangers – just bad-ass shifters with one goal: claim the prize. Claim the Caller of the Blood.

Fantastic urban fantasy!
By Booknova
I really like this book even though the cover was iffy. If you think this is a paranormal romance, you will probably be disappointed.

This is an urban fantasy that sets up supernaturals hiding in the present world with a magical human called the Caller of the Blood (new idea! yay!). The plot is fast but the places are richly described, the people fascinating, and the action kept me voraciously reading.

There are quite a few characters introduced but they are there for the next books so it's not in vain. While there is sexual tension, there isn't any sex in this book. The violence is bloody and life-threatening. While the end isn't a cliffhanger, the story does continue (if you've read other urban fantasy you know the setup).

Very enjoyable story
By Sheena Lynch
I really enjoyed this story. It definitely went different directions than I thought it would, which was a nice surprise. I have a couple minor issues with the story, but nothing major, and nothing that takes away from how enjoyable the story was.

Emma has a fairly normal life. If you don’t count that her best friend and roommate is a shapeshifter. Other than that, things are perfectly normal….aren’t they?

When supernatural goons try to kidnap her, she has to put her trust into her best friend, his brother and their friend. But what are three supernatural allies against an army of supernatural baddies, all intent on getting her to the Jaguar King, and what the heck does he want with her anyways?

And why will NO ONE explain anything to her???

This was a fun read. There were aspects of it that reminded me, in a small way, of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, in sense of writing and in the way this author chose to create some of her characters. The only thing that I can pinpoint that was an issue, for me, within the story was small discrepancies that the author apparently didn’t catch. For instance, a character was wearing a black dress in one paragraph, and further down the page the dress apparently became blue. Or someone was wearing sweatpants that somehow turned into jeans, all in the same scene. Nothing major, but this type of thing did happen often throughout the story. Hopefully it doesn’t affect larger plot points further in this series. Other than that, though, everything else was written wonderfully.

The story had humor, drama, action, and a myriad of other things in it, combining together to make it flow really well. And I personally loved that she didn’t focus on a romantic interest throughout the book. Sure, there is potential with several of the characters so far, but literally zero “boy meets girl” type of crap most authors feel the need to shove in your face in these types of stories. The author actually provides you with a legit novel that doesn’t need to sugar coat a mediocre story with some illogical romance. The story carries itself, and doesn’t need the “insta-love” or “insta-lust”, even, to hold its own. It was a breath of fresh air, to say the least.

I definitely recommend this book. If you like LKH’s Anita Blake series, or even the Sookie Stackhouse series, I think you would like this. It’s different than those stories in many ways (and definitely not as dark as the Anita Blake books), but it still somehow fits in the same box, to me, as those books do. Can’t wait to get my hands on the next in this series, and I’ll definitely be checking out more of this authors works in the future!

Interesting start
By Todd A. Parker
This book was definitely an interesting start to a series. At time a little confusing, but it held my interest to the very end. If you like a mystery with a fun and snarky lead lady this might be the book for you.
